CVS Robbery Suspect In Custody
A LaPorte man police there say robbed the CVS drug store early Saturday morning was arrested a short time after the early morning holdup. Officers responded to an alarm just before 1 a.m. to the store on Lincolnway. An employee told the officers a man came to the pharmacy with a note requesting specific medications. Continue reading
Bid for Emergency Bridge Repair Comes in Over Budget
The lone bid to fix the bridge on Starke County Road 700 East over the Yellow River came in significantly higher than county officials had anticipated. LaPorte Construction bid $106,872 for the emergency repair. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler says that figure is between $50,000 and $60,000 more than he had budgeted for the work. As a result, repairs that were to begin today and be finished by Aug. 15 have been delayed indefinitely. Continue reading
National Weather Service Confirms Multiple Tornadoes After Last Week’s Storm
The National Weather Service confirms two tornadoes touched down in the northeastern part of Starke County last week. Another pair of tornadoes was also confirmed in LaPorte County in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 1. All four were EF-1, packing wind speeds of between 95 and 105 miles-per-hour. Marshall County Crews Still Cleaning up after Last Week’s Storms
Crews continue to clean up after last week’s storms.
Marshall County Interim Highway Superintendent Jason Peters told the commissioners Monday morning that the highway department is continuing to remove debris from the area. One issue that he’s having is the theft of “road closed” signs. He learned of the thefts when the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department called him to ask to close a road so work could be done. Generator Issue Picks up Power in Pulaski County
The issue concerning generators at the county home and county health department in Pulaski County may soon come to conclusion.
Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston presented information to the commissioners about the cost associated with self-starting generators. The commission members quickly found the approximate $85,000 cost too high.
Knox City Council to Meet Tonight
The Knox City Council will meet tonight to talk more about two ordinances that were approved on the first reading during their last meeting.
The council members will discuss the tall grass ordinance. They had a question about the penalties involved with the non-removal of rank vegetation so that issue will be tackled tonight. Another issue will be the number of days that would be allowed before the city would go in and mow the property. The second reading on that ordinance is on the agenda tonight.
Saturday Morning Fire Under Investigation
An investigator from the state fire marshal’s office will be in Starke County today to determine the origin and cause of a Saturday morning house fire. The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to an unoccupied home at 8875 East 25 North in Knox just after 5 a.m. and remained on the scene for nearly two hours.

Hydration is especially important to workers in construction zones, commercial bakeries and laundries, foundries, transportation and utilities, agriculture, landscaping services, and more.
Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Make sure plenty of water is on hand at your work site. You should not wait until thirst determines your need for water. Drink five to seven ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes, or one bottle of water an hour, to keep hydrated.

LaPorte Man Arrested on Child Pornography, Child Exploitation Charges
A LaPorte man was arrested Monday afternoon after several police agencies served a state search warrant at his home.
Detectives with the Indiana State Police (ISP), ISP Crimes Against Children Detectives, North Mobile Forensic Vehicle, and the ISP K9 assisted the LaPorte City Police Department in serving the search warrant at 205 Woodward Street in LaPorte. It was there where officers found possible evidence that 34-year-old Ronald E. Wheaton was allegedly in the possession of child pornography.
Starke County Industrial Park Road Improvements Begin Today
Improvements to the south intersection of 300 East and State Road 8 in Starke County begin today. That’s the main road to the Knox Industrial Park. The goal of the project is to improve access for large trucks. Project manager Andrew Schouten with Milford-based Phend & Brown says the road will be closed sometime today so work can be done. Starke County Commissioners Set to Open Bridge Bids
The Starke County Commissioners will open bids this morning for work on three bridges and award at least one contract so work can begin immediately. A previously announced timeline for the emergency repair of the bridge over the Yellow River on County Road 700 East calls for construction to start tomorrow and conclude on Aug. 15. The road has been closed since a tree floating down the river struck the bridge supports this spring. The commissioners will also open bids for the replacement of the bridges on 900 south just west of 100 West over Bogus Run and on 800 East over Eagle Creek, just north of 50 South. No timeline was given for those repairs. Continue reading
Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today
The Marshall County Commissioners will meet in regular session this morning with several items on the agenda.
Bart Trester from USI will give the commissioners an update on two county projects. The 7th Road project recently had a hiccup when unstable, organic soil was found. It had to be dug up and removed from the area.

Town-Wide Yard Sales Set in Winamac
The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will host a town-wide yard sale event on Saturday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET in Winamac, rain or shine.
If you plan on having a yard sale, reserve a spot on the map for $10. The maps will be available for all shoppers at the Pulaski County Chamber office at 102 N. Monticello Street in Winamac. The deadline for placement on the map is Friday, July 11.
Kid’s Closet Ministry Schedules School Supply Drive
The Kid’s Closet Ministry at North Judson United Methodist Church is taking steps to equip Starke County youngsters with supplies for the start of school. They are hosting their second annual “Pack-a-Backpack” event on Aug. 4 and 5 at the church from 5 until 6:30 p.m. for all youngsters in need who attend local schools. First they need supplies.
