LaPorte Man Arrested on Child Pornography, Child Exploitation Charges

A LaPorte man was arrested Monday afternoon after several police agencies served a state search warrant at his home.

Detectives with the Indiana State Police (ISP), ISP Crimes Against Children Detectives, North Mobile Forensic Vehicle, and the ISP K9 assisted the LaPorte City Police Department in serving the search warrant at 205 Woodward Street in LaPorte. It was there where officers found possible evidence that 34-year-old Ronald E. Wheaton was allegedly in the possession of child pornography.

Starke County Commissioners Set to Open Bridge Bids

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Commissioners will open bids this morning for work on three bridges and award at least one contract so work can begin immediately. A previously announced timeline for the emergency repair of the bridge over the Yellow River on County Road 700 East calls for construction to start tomorrow and conclude on Aug. 15. The road has been closed since a tree floating down the river struck the bridge supports this spring. The commissioners will also open bids for the replacement of the bridges on 900 south just west of 100 West over Bogus Run and on 800 East over Eagle Creek, just north of 50 South. No timeline was given for those repairs. Continue reading →

Town-Wide Yard Sales Set in Winamac

The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will host a town-wide yard sale event on Saturday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET in Winamac, rain or shine.

If you plan on having a yard sale, reserve a spot on the map for $10. The maps will be available for all shoppers at the Pulaski County Chamber office at 102 N. Monticello Street in Winamac. The deadline for placement on the map is Friday, July 11.

JAG Students Receive Scholarship Awards

JAG students from nine schools in Northwest Indiana recently received scholarship awards totaling $215,434.

According to Miche Grant, Vice President at the Center of Workforce Innovations and the Northwest Indiana Workforce Board, the students who participated in the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program will have the opportunity to use this money to help pay for post-secondary education.

Aric Almirola Wins Eventful Race at Daytona

It was a rough weekend at Daytona International Speedway where Mother Nature and slick track conditions played a part in the abbreviated Coke Zero 400 on Sunday.

The driver who was happy to see rain come down was Richard Petty Motorsports’ Aric Almirola who took the famed No. 43 back to Victory Lane – the same place it was parked 30 years ago at Daytona when Richard Petty won his 200th race.

It took Almirola a while to get there.

Divers Recover Body from Lake Maxinkuckee

Indiana Conservation Officers and the Marshall County Coroner are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man whose body was recovered by divers in Culver’s Lake Maxinkuckee Friday night.

The man, Jose Cruz Lizcano-Fernandez, of Logansport, was last seen swimming at the Culver Public Beach and was reported missing four to five hours later, according to a news release from the DNR.  Divers from the Indiana Conservation Office assisted in the search while using “side scan sonar” to locate him.  His body was recovered within 30 minutes of the initial call and was located approximately 15 feet outside of the swim area at Culver Public Beach in about five feet of water.

Two Arrested on Meth Charges

Two people were arrested in Marshall County after a search warrant was conducted Wednesday at a home in the 20,000 block of 8th Road.

Marshall County Police Department Patrol Division officers and K9 Arras assisted Indiana parole officers on a parole visit at the home. When officers arrived at the scene, it appeared that no one was home but items pertaining to the manufacture of methamphetamine could be seen in plain view.

Tornado Activity Confirmed in Starke County

“Tornado activity” was confirmed by the National Weather Service as the cause of extensive damage from Monday night’s storms in the Grovertown area.

Starke County EMA Director Ted Bombagetti told WKVI News that he conducted an assessment in the Grovertown area late Wednesday afternoon and he observed rotational damage in the area. That information was forwarded to National Weather Service officials who confirmed “tornado activity” occurred in the area.

Infant Death Under Investigation

Winamac Police Department detectives and officials with the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death of a two-month-old boy.

Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan told WKVI News that the infant died Tuesday morning at a home in the 400 block of Main Street in Winamac. The child had previous medical issues and no foul play is suspected at this time.
