West Central School Board Discusses Kindergarten Roundup, Staffing

 
 

The West Central School Board got an update from Elementary Principal Dan Zylstra concerning the Kindergarten Roundup enrollment. Superintendent Charles Mellon indicated that the numbers look good.

“Our roundup figures are near 70 which is good for us. We were down to only two sections last year. That means we do have kids in the community that will be coming to school next year,” stated Mellon.

Maxinkuckee Players Announce Summer Production

  
 

The Maxinkuckee Players summer production will be Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Show dates are July 26, July 28, July 31 and Aug. 2-4.

Open auditions will be held Saturday, April 20 at the Culver High School Auditorium from 8–11 a.m., 12–3 p.m. and 4–7 p.m. CT. If you are interested in auditioning, you will be asked to sing a song of your choice, but not necessarily from the musical. A pianist and CD player will be available for you to sing along or you may sing A Capella.

The Winamac Community High School will soon present Tarzan the musical, and the socialtorium stage has recently undergone a transformation into an African jungle as parents, students, and staff work diligently to bring the bigger-than-life legend of Tarzan to the stage. The production stars Winamac junior J.T. Garnett in the title role and includes co-stars Taylor Smith, Emerald Blankenship, Andrew Brandon, Ralph Thomas and Joshua Tankersley.

Officers Conduct Compliance Sweep of Registered Sex Offenders

“Operation Lost Innocence” was conducted in LaPorte County this week. This is an effort by various local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to check compliance of sex offenders.

Parole officers and investigators from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Michigan City Police and United States Marshals Service verified residency and employment of 87 sex offenders who reside and work in LaPorte County.

Francesville Man Sentenced in Pulaski Superior Court

A Francesville man was sentenced in Pulaski Superior Court this week after pleading guilty in a plea agreement with the state.

Sean Allman was sentenced to serve 14 months in the Pulaski County Jail on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class D Felony. All of the sentence will be suspended with the exception of 60 days. He will serve 12 months of probation. He was also ordered to pay $365 in restitution to James Ledden.

Fundraiser Contributes More Than $40,000 to Panhandle Pathway

A local fundraising effort culminated in the presentation of a check in excess of $40,000 for the Panhandle Pathway. Dan and Virginia Dolezal, co-chairs of Panhandle Pathway’s Pave the Trail to Town fundraiser, presented the donation to the board of directors at the business meeting on March 26. Dan Dolezal said the original goal was $39,000, but after kicking off the effort on Nov. 1, the group had raised more than their original goal by Feb. 25. The fundraising continued until March 31, and Dolezal said they had raised $41,075 by that time.

Pulaski County Building Inspector Dave Dare has an assistant to help with some of the additional responsibilities recently given to his office. Dare is also in charge of enforcing the county’s comprehensive land use plan, which was adopted last year by the county commissioners. They voted Monday to hire David R. Weber as an assistant to the county building official and secretary to the advisory plan commission and board of zoning appeals. The position is part-time, as the plan commission and BZA meet once a month.

Energy was the topic of discussion during the West Central School Board meeting Thursday night. Superintendent Charles Mellon said the board signed a contract with Sure Energy.

“This is the company that will do the maintenance on our [wind] turbine. They’re out of Sandusky, Ohio,” said Mellon.

Pulaski County Public Library Now Offers MP3 and Magazine Downloads

  
 
The Pulaski County Public Library is working hard at expanding its services, and to that end, the library has added digital magazine and MP3 music file downloads to its collection. The library’s website now offers access to more than 3 million downloadable songs, including access to The Freegal Music Service, an online database with legal music files that do not expire and are compatible with nearly all devices.

Pulaski County Public Library resident cardholders are eligible for three MP3 downloads per week, available online at www.pulaskicounty.lib.in.us. Library officials expect Freegal will appeal to patrons of all ages and musical tastes, and librarians will be happy to assist users with the new service.

Nominations and Applications Sought by IDEM for Environmental Award

  
 
In an effort to recognize Indiana’s extraordinary environmental stewards and projects aimed at preventing pollution in 2011 and 2012, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is now accepting nominations and applications for the 2013 Indiana Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence. Nominations and applications may be submitted to IDEM through April 19.

Hoosier businesses, schools, trade associations, environmental groups, nonprofit organizations and individuals are eligible for the awards program, which includes such categories as Energy and Renewable Resources, Five Years’ Continuous Improvement, Greening the Government, Land Use, Outreach or Education, Pollution Prevention, and Recycling or Reuse.

Governor, Legislators and Medical Experts Don’t Agree on Obamacare

 
 
Governor Mike Pence is against expanding Medicaid to help cover some 400 thousand uninsured Hoosiers. He’s banking on federal government approval of the expansion of the already-existing Healthy Indiana Plan. Representative Ed Clere, chair of the Public Health Committee, amended Senate Bill 551 to require the Pence Administration to negotiate with the feds – not just leave it as an option.

Clere says some worry the federal government will back out of paying.

New Bill Requires WorkOne Face Time for Unemployment Recipients

 

A bill dealing with unemployment insurance is making its way through the House, but must be voted on one more time before it goes to the governor’s desk for his signature. House Bill 1457, authored by State Representative Dan Leonard of Huntington, passed out of the Senate with a 34-14 vote but will return to the House to allow them to review some small changes to other provisions in the bill.

Pulaski County Commissioners OK Hotel Feasibility Study Expenditure

Pulaski County Commissioners have approved the expenditure of up to $1,000 on a feasibility study for a proposed hotel in Winamac. Wisconsin-based Cobblestone Development has approached the Winamac Town Council about building a hotel there geared to business travelers. The first step is a feasibility study, of which the company will pay half. Pulaski County Economic Development Director Nathan P. Origer says officials with the town of Winamac have asked local shareholders to help offset the $3,500 cost. Commissioner Larry Brady says there’s definitely a need for affordable overnight accommodations.

Failure to Stop After Accident Lands Fort Wayne Man in Jail

 
 

A Fort Wayne man was arrested Wednesday after he reportedly caused damage to the railroad crossing arms on U.S. 35 and did not stop to report the accident.

A Starke County officer notified dispatch that a semi truck driver was crossing the railroad tracks on U.S. 35 in Knox as the crossing arms were coming down and continued traveling north despite the falling crossing arms, causing damage to the equipment.

Town of Culver Hoping to Have Draft of Comprehensive Plan by Fall

The town of Culver is getting ready to kick off their comprehensive plan project with a community meeting at the beach lodge. Town Manager David Schoeff said that on April 22, the town will be holding the meeting in an effort to get some public input and expressed that the comprehensive plan is less focused on what the town council or administration wants to do with the town, but more of how the community feels the town should develop.

Plymouth Redevelopment Corporation Opens River Park Square Bids

  
 
The Plymouth Redevelopment Corporation will choose a contractor for the new River Park Square at its April 16 meeting. E&B Paving of Rochester and Michiana Contracting both bid on the project. Both bids include a base amount and several alternate options, including a performance space, a fountain, a furnace in the restrooms and a pergola in the farmer’s market. The budget for the project is $1.5 million. The Plymouth Park Board, the Redevelopment Commission and the city council will review the bids prior to the April 16 meeting.
