A local funeral director has been appointed to the National Funeral Directors Association Member Resources Advisory Group.

Samuel Frain of Frain Mortuary in Winamac will help other members in the organization evaluate existing member benefits; recommend new programs, products and services; review and provide feedback on new resources; and assist with the recruitment and retention of members from around the world.

City of Knox Outdoor Decoration Contest Dec. 16

Get out the ladders and buy another string of lights! The city of Knox will sponsor an outdoor Christmas decoration contest again this year.

On the evening of Monday, Dec. 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the committee members will travel around the city of Knox and judge all outdoor decorations. Make sure you have all lighted displays turned on that day in order to be part of the contest.

The first place winner will receive $100, second place will win $50 and third place will get $25.

“America’s Bargain Capital” is quite a bit brighter thanks to an energy efficiency incentive offered by Kankakee Valley REMC. Mark Bailey of Bailey’s Discount Center opted to replace all of the old fluorescent and metal halide fixtures in the warehouse with modern, higher-efficiency fluorescents after talking to REMC officials about the Power Moves incentive program. Wabash Valley Power, the organization that supplies wholesale electricity to Kankakee Valley REMC, pays cash incentives to commercial and industrial facilities that replace older, less-efficient lighting and other equipment with higher-efficiency devices. As an REMC member, Bailey’s was eligible for the program. Kankakee Valley REMC Energy Advisor Darrell Marks recently presented Bailey a rebate check for $7,600.

Pulaski County’s Winter Wonderland is this Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET in the downtown area.

Among the many deals the downtown merchants will have, along with cookies and cider and caroling at the courthouse, the Iris-Elm Christmas Arrangements Show will be in the Historic Railroad Freight Depot on West Main Street in Winamac. Representatives from Google will host a free tech workshop for small businesses on Friday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon CT at the Radisson Star Plaza in Merrillville.

Indiana Senator Dan Coats is partnering with Google to present this workshop which is aimed to help small business owners create their own websites. Those in attendance will receive a customized domain name, free web hosting for a year, a local business listing on Google Maps, plus free tools, training and resources.

A multi-year agreement has been reached between NBC Sports Group and former Richard Childress Racing driver Jeff Burton for NBC Sports and NBCSN’s coverage of NASCAR in the next season. NASCAR Drivers Roll out Super Late Models to Participate in Snowball Derby

You can’t keep a NASCAR driver away from the track for too long. The NASCAR off-season is short for some drivers who will be participating in the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida this weekend. It’s an event that features the best-of-the-best in short track racing.

David Ragan, Erik Jones and Daniel Hemric are preparing their Super Late Model machines to skid around the track in the Snowball Derby 300 in between NASCAR seasons.

Gary Man Jailed Following Michigan City Shooting

A Gary man faces a criminal recklessness charge following an early morning shooting in rural Michigan City Tuesday. Officers from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department were called to the Woodland Crossing Apartment Complex just before 1 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When they arrived they were told a man had been shot and had been taken to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle. Witnesses gave the officers a description of the suspect’s vehicle, and within minutes it was located in a nearby housing complex. A short time later Daryle C. Anderson, Jr., 23, of Gary, was arrested without incident. Police have not released the victim’s name. He was released from the hospital after being treated for a bullet wound to his lower back. LaCrossee Volunteer Firefighter Faces Drunk Driving Charges

An area volunteer firefighter faces drunk driving charges stemming from an apparent Saturday night drinking binge. Dennis Masek, 37, of LaCrosse was arrested by officers from the LaPorte County Police early Sunday morning after a motorist reportedly had to swerve to avoid his truck, which was stopped in the middle of U.S. 421 about two miles north of LaCrossee. WSBT-TV reports the driver asked Masek to pull into a nearby driveway to get off the highway. Instead, he reportedly drove past the driveway and into a ditch. Continue reading →

The Starke County Commissioners met in a special session with the building corporation for the construction of the Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center prior to the commissioner’s regularly scheduled meeting. Commissioner Kathy Norem explained the meeting was necessary in order to appoint a lessor representative to allow them to approve and pay claims.

Another hurdle has been cleared for the creation of a banquet hall and reception center in Pulaski County after the county commissioners last night voted to approve the advisory plan commission’s recommendation to rezone the Francesville property. The plan commission previously approved the request from the Saltzman family to rezone three parcels from agricultural to commercial use.

Marshall County Commissioners Approve Recommendation for Metronet Funding

The Marshall County Commissioners will send a recommendation to the county council for funding to support the Metronet project.

St. Joseph Valley Metronet will be laying down a fiber-optic network infrastructure from St. Joseph County to Plymouth with the cost being split between the county and the City of Plymouth. St. Joseph County, South Bend, the City of Plymouth and Marshall County are paying for the conduit for the project while other entities are paying for the telecommunications cable.

Fire at Brother’s Nightclub Under Investigation

The cause of a fire in Plymouth that wreaked havoc on a nightclub is still under investigation. Investigators say the fire occurred just before 11 p.m. Sunday night in the 400 block of West LaPorte Street at Brother’s nightclub.

Firefighters have stated that they believe the fire started in the basement but no definite cause has been determined.

No customers were reportedly inside the club when the fire occurred and no injuries have been reported.

Two Arrested on Dealing Marijuana Charges in Marshall County

Two out of county residents were arrested by Marshall County officers after a traffic stop in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle owned by 54-year-old Leisa Brooks of Indianapolis near the U.S. 31 and U.S. 30 interchange. Officers conducted an investigation and allegedly found approximately 200 grams of marijuana.

Seven Arrested in Drunk Driving Incidents in Pulaski County

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department was one of 250 law enforcement agencies that participated in the Operation Pull Over effort over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sheriff Michael Gayer stated that seven impaired drivers were arrested in the campaign.

The Indiana State Police was also involved in this effort. Officers participated in extra patrols during the Thanksgiving travel weekend in the Safe Family Travel, Operation Pull Over campaign that ended Sunday.

LaPorte Police Investigate Incident Involving Alleged Gun Fire

LaPorte City Police Department officers responded to a call of shots fired on Friday and all people at the scene denied any knowledge of the action, despite the location of the gun and spent casings found at the scene.

When officers arrived at 1083 E. State Road 2 near lot #806, two men standing outside ran into the home while one man stayed outside. Officers asked the man if he had heard any gunshots and he said that he hadn’t.
