Christmas is one month from today, and the biggest shopping day of the year is Friday. Purdue Extension Health and Human Sciences Educator Julie Butus says the best way to avoid the post-holiday blues when you get your bank or credit card statements in January is to make a realistic plan before you head to the mall.

“Decide who you’re going to buy your gifts for. Set a limit. You might make some of the gifts. You might go shopping early and find really nice selections in the stores. The longer you wait, you tend to spend more,” said Butus.

Time to Enter the Holiday Lights Contest in Pulaski County

The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce is inviting you to take part in the 2013 holiday lights contest.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to pick up a registration form at the Chamber of Commerce, fill it out and pay $10 cash to enter into the contest. On Dec. 4 and Dec. 5, judges will be traveling around Pulaski County to see which house and which business has the most festive decorations for the season. Make sure all lighted displays are on from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET both days.

Monterey Bridge Opens to Traffic

The Monterey bridge, or bridge 291, is now open to traffic.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday afternoon to officially open the bridge that had been under construction since March. The project had been on the drawing board for several years.

Commissioner Larry Brady attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and was happy with the work of all involved.

Cause Found for Electrical Blinks

Kankakee Valley REMC officials have received word on what caused three separate electrical blinks Thursday night around 8 p.m. CT.

According to spokesperson Amanda Steeb, customers in Hanna, Bass Lake, North Judson and Knox were affected. REMC contacted NIPSCO who found a failed insulator on a pole. The foggy conditions during the evening Thursday and the moisture in the air caused a short in the electric current which led to the short electrical blinks.

Crews are repairing the issue.

Winamac Police Department Investigates Accident

The Winamac Police Department continues to investigate an accident that occurred just after midnight where a vehicle ran into a home at the intersection of State Road 14 west and State Road 35.

When police arrived at the scene two minutes later, officer found that the vehicle struck the home’s foundation at the intersection which caused considerable damage. The passenger car came to rest along a fence.

WKVI Food Drive at Sanders, Five Star Begins at 9 a.m.

It’s finally here. The fourth WKVI Food Drive at Five Star – and this year, Sanders Foods as well – runs this morning from 9 a.m. until noon, live on K99.3 FM. The staff is hoping to outdo last year’s donation of 375 pounds of food for the local food pantry, and to aid in that, the food drivee features a new addition to the event as WKVI General Manager Jerry Curtis will be broadcasting live and accepting donations at Sander’s Foods in Winamac while Tom Berg and Lenny Dessauer broadcast and collect at Five Star in Knox.

Bremen Man Sentenced in U.S. District Court

A mail carrier from Marshall County who admitted stealing gift cards and cash from the mail during the holiday season was recently sentenced in U.S. District Court. Harold Snyder, 20, of Bremen, previously pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor offense of obstructing the mail. Court documents indicate he stole the items between November and December of last year. He was sentenced to six months in prison.

Education Representative Needed for Starke County Community Corrections Board

The Starke County Commissioners are looking to fill a vacancy on the Starke County Community Corrections Advisory Board . State law requires a representative from a school corporation within the county to serve on the agency’s board. That position was most recently filled by North Judson-San Pierre High School Principal Annette Zupin. President of the Commissioners Kathy Norem says Zupin resigned from the SCCC board. The commissioners are responsible for naming her replacement. Any representative from Knox, North Judson-San Pierre or Oregon-Davis who would like to serve is asked to contact the Starke County Auditor’s Office. Starke County Community Corrections oversees select adult and juvenile criminal offenders who are sentenced to probation or home detention.

Starke County Commissioners Seek Part-Time Inspector, Data Entry Assistant

The Starke County Commissioners are looking to fill a part-time position that will be shared between two departments. The applicant will serve as a part-time building inspector and assist with data entry to help update the county codes and ordinances. The need for a part-time building inspector was pointed out recently when Terry Stephenson was off work due to illness and work he normally handles could not be done. County commissioners discussed the matter and decided to hire someone to handle both roles. Members voted unanimously to advertise the opening for the position.

National Adoption Day Ceremony Held in Starke Circuit Court

Friday was National Adoption Day, offering a time for courts across the country to raise awareness of children in foster care who are ready and waiting to be adopted. Rhonda Adcock, director of the Starke County CASA program, told the audience assembled in the courtroom of the importance of adoption and the effect it can have on a child eagerly awaiting their “forever” family.

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board recognized the efforts of two teachers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Superintendent Lynn Johnson said Leslie Hampton and Chrystal Ingram received the Bluejay Way awards in light of their dedication to the success of the corporation.

Johnson said Leslie not only teaches the course for Family Consumer Science but she has also been managing the PowerSchool system for the corporation.

Starke County Commissioners Approve 2014 Holiday Schedule

Starke County employees will get a long weekend next year to celebrate Christmas. December 25, 2014 falls on a Thursday. The Starke County Commissioners approved a holiday schedule that includes closing the courthouse at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014 and remaining closed through the following Monday. Commissioner Jennifer Davis says that decision was reached after consulting county employees as to their preference. The rest of the county’s holiday observances will remain the same.

Pulaski County CDC and Winamac Town Manager Meet with Investors

Pulaski County Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer and Winamac Town Manager Jim Conner met with potential investors concerning a proposed hotel project on Wednesday.

Conner told WKVI that about 15 potential investors met and learned more about the project and discussed the need for a hotel in the area. Local business and industry leaders expressed that several representatives visit not only the Pulaski County area, but the Knox and Culver areas and it would beneficial to them to see this project become a reality.

Starke County Council Moves Money to Sheriff’s Pension Fund

The Starke County Sheriff’s Pension Fund is funded at a historically high level thanks to action earlier this week by the county council. Members voted unanimously to move $65,890.98 from the County Adjusted Gross Income Tax fund into the pension line item. Auditor Kay Chaffins explained that the state Department of Local Government Finance does not want the CAGIT money to go into the county general fund this year. Council President Dave Pearman says the transfer is consistent with the overall vision for the pension fund.
