Traffic Stop Leads to Cocaine Bust in Marshall County
A Goshen man is jailed on a $10,000 bond in Marshall County after police there reportedly found cocaine in his car after a traffic stop. An officer from the Marshall County Police Department pulled a car driven by Miguel A. Sanchez, 40, over Monday around 11:30 p.m. on U.S. 31 near 11th Road for an expired temporary license plate. The arrest report indicates the officer found cocaine during the investigation. Formal charges are pending with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
City of Knox to Refund $200 BZA Fee
The city of Knox will be refunded a $200 fee from the Board of Zoning Appeals for Gary Dulin after the city council this week approved the refund due to a city ordinance that had been overlooked before the fee was charged. Mayor Rick Chambers told the council that Plan Commissioner Bruce Williams had been working with Dulin on Water Street regarding a request from Dulin to keep horses on his land, and charged a $200 BZA fee in order for the matter to be reviewed.

LaPorte Police Department Investigating Jewelry Store Theft
LaPorte Police are searching for a man and a woman they say are responsible for the theft of rings valued at $5,500 from a jewelry store there on Monday afternoon. Staff at Engrstrom Jewelers called the police when they noticed a tray of sapphire rings missing. Security footage from the store shows a black male reaching over the display counter, removing the tray and concealing it. Store employees say the man came in around 2:50 Monday afternoon with a black woman who asked to be sized for a bracelet. The theft happened when the store staff was retrieving supplies to do so. When they came back out the couple reportedly left hastily, saying their car was done being repaired and they were only window shopping. The jewelry is described as blue sapphire gems set on both yellow and white gold bands. Store employees say the man and woman were both older and black with heavyset builds. Indiana Court of Appeals Rules in Robert “Ryan” Corbin’s Favor
The Indiana Court of Appeals released a decision regarding the charges filed against former Knox High School teacher Robert “Ryan” Corbin.
A hearing was held in September in the Indiana Court of Appeals where oral arguments were heard in the case of Robert “Ryan” Corbin who was accused of two counts of Attempted Child Seduction. It was Corbin’s attempt to overturn Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall’s denial of a motion to dismiss the charges of Attempted Child Seduction against him.
Cause of Early Morning Fire Remains Under Investigation
This morning’s fire at a vacant home in the 1300 South block of 300 East near Binkley Drive in Knox remains under investigation. Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost says an investigator from the state fire marshal’s office has been called in, and the police are also looking into the incident. Firefighters were dispatched to the home around 1 a.m. and remained on the scene for about 6 hours. No injuries were reported. Pfost adds nobody was living in the house at the time.

Knox Fire Department Responds to Early Morning House Fire
The Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to a home on County Road 300 East near Binkley Drive early this morning for a house fire. Dispatchers with the Starke County Sheriff’s Office advise that call came in just before 1 this morning. Firefighters were still on the scene as of 4 a.m. No injuries were reported. Check this site later today for updates as more information becomes available.

Argos Woman Sentenced to 16 Years for Selling LSD to a Confidential Informant
Senior Judge Walter Palmer sentenced Lacey Nicole Holzwart on a charge of selling LSD to a confidential informant in a controlled buy arrangement. Holzwart had pleaded guilty to the charge in a plea agreement with the state. Two years of that sentence was suspended.
Knox Woman Sentenced to Ten Years in the DOC
Heather Gutierrez, 34, was charged with Conspiring to Manufacture Methamphetamine, a Class B felony. She admitted that she agreed to cook pseudoephedrine-based products at a property that is a family housing complex and is immediately adjacent to a public park.
Starke Commissioners Again Table Road Vacation Request in Monterey Resorts
Gudeman said he had published a notice in the newspaper in time and said he has proof of its publication. He said everything is in order for them to proceed with vacating the road, and all adjoining properties have been given notice. The properties would be extended to where the road was located.
No one in the audience offered any opposition, and Gudeman asked that the commissioners approve his request. However, Commissioner Kathy Norem said they would approve his request at the next meeting.
Mullins, Wireman Sentenced in Starke Circuit Court
Avery Mullins pleaded guilty to a charge of Dealing a Narcotic Drug – Heroin as a Class B felony. Judge Hall sentenced Mullins to 10 years in the Department of Corrections with no part of that sentence suspended. If Mullins successfully completes the CLIFF or GRIP program while in prison, he may petition the court for a modification of his sentence. Mullins will serve this sentence consecutively with a previous sentence.
Aaron Wireman pleaded guilty to a charge of Counterfeiting and received a sentence of 30 months in the Department of Corrections with no part of the sentence suspended. He will serve this sentence consecutively with a previous sentence.
Knox Clerk-Treasurer’s Office May Soon Adopt New Accounting Module
The Knox Clerk-Treasurer’s Office may soon adopt a new work order module as an add-on to their existing Keystone accounting program. The program would be used to keep track of the history of utility customers, allowing the office to more easily generate and keep track of work orders. Currently, the office has forms that are used for work orders, filled out on paper, but are burdensome and problematic.
The new accounting module and software would allow the office to automatically populate the utility customer’s information on the work order form to be passed to the utility crew, saving quite a bit of time. It would also keep track of the history of utility clients and addresses, allowing them to better track any problem histories.

Judge Kim Hall sentenced Back to 13 years in the Department of Corrections with no part of that sentence suspended. If he completes a therapeutic community program while incarcerated, he may petition the court for a modification of his sentence.
Back was arrested in May after Starke County Sheriff’s deputies reportedly found him hiding in a bathroom in the Stay-4-Less motel in Knox where methamphetamine-related paraphernalia and precursors were found.
