The Knox and Oregon-Davis School Boards could vote tonight to adopt a balanced school calendar for the 2015-2016 school year, and the North Judson-San Pierre School Board will consider one when they meet tomorrow. Public Balanced Calendar Presentation Scheduled Tonight at Culver
Several area school corporations are considering the adoption of a balanced school calendar for the 2015-2016 school year. The Rochester Community School Corporation already has one in place. Officials from that corporation will present information during a community meeting this evening at 6 p.m. EDT at Culver Community High School. North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Lynn Johnson says the proposed schedule would still provide the state-mandated 180 instructional days with more breaks during the school year. North Judson-San Pierre School Board members raised a question about the balanced calendar during their meeting last night. The proposed calendar moves the start of school to the first of August, adds longer breaks in the fall and spring that can be used for remediation if necessary and ends the school year the first of June. The first semester would still end in December before the two week Christmas break as it presently does.

Oregon-Davis School Board to Consider Balanced Calendar
The Oregon-Davis School Board will be considering a balanced calendar during their meeting tonight.
During their last meeting, Superintendent Greg Briles gave the board a couple of different calendars to study. Briles stated that the calenders are very similar in that they have 180 days of student instruction and 184 says for staff which is outlined in their contract. The calendars would include a break in the fall and an intersession to be coordinated with the Starke County Youth Club for remediation purposes. The first day of school would be Aug. 1 and last day would be June 1.

The Oregon-Davis School Board recently hosted a community meeting to inform parents, students and community members about the technology plan, what’s happening in the future in the junior/senior high school and about the balanced calendar.

Oregon-Davis parents are invited to a community meeting tomorrow evening at the school to learn more about the balanced calendar approach several school corporations are considering.
A free spaghetti dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria prior to the informational meeting at 6. The district’s technology plan will also be covered, and other topics will be discussed as well.
Balanced Calendar Public Meetings Set This Week
Community meetings are set for Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. ET at the Walkerton Elementary School; Wednesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. CT at the Oregon-Davis Board Room; Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. ET at the Culver High School; March 13 at 6 p.m. ET at the Argos Administration Building; and March 13 at 7 p.m. ET at the John Glenn High School.
Area Schools Present Balanced Calendar Information
Area school corporations continue to present information about a balanced calendar school schedule. Argos, Culver, John Glenn, Knox, North Judson-San Pierre, Oregon-Davis, Plymouth and Triton are all considering the approach. During a meeting last night at the high school cafeteria, Knox Superintendent A.J. Gappa stressed the balanced calendar is not year-round school. It still provides the state-mandated 180 days of classroom instruction. School would start about a week or a week-and-a-half earlier than it does now and end at the beginning of June. The schedule would also feature two-week breaks for remediation and vacation in the fall and spring. Research indicates student grades improve and discipline problems decrease when schools go to the balanced calendar approach. Additionally, students retain more knowledge from one school year to the next. Continue reading
Knox School Board to Meet, Public Meetings Scheduled This Week for Balanced Calendar Discussion
The board members will receive an update on the results of the NWEA test as well as a presentation on the Biomedical Science course addition at the high school.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT in the administrative office in the Palmer Wing of the Knox Elementary School.
