Looking for More Ways to Help Out Local Kids? Attend Starke County CASA’s Training Course This Spring
There is still time to register for the spring session of Starke County CASA training for anyone interested in being the voice for a local child in need.
A “CASA” or a Court Appointed Special Advocate works with local children who have had abuse or neglect reported to the authorities. Starke County CASA Director Rhonda Adcock has been a CASA volunteer for 10 years and has served as Starke County’s director for 8 years.
Adcock reported that since becoming the director, she’s seen the number of cases in the county triple. While they have seen in increase in the amount of volunteers over the last few years, Adcock said this next class will be very important in helping eliminate the CASA waiting list in Starke County. Local Groups Come Together for Child Abuse Prevention Awareness
An event designed to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect will be taking place in Starke County, Tuesday.
The Indiana Department of Child Services, along with several other organizations will be hosting a ceremony that highlights techniques that can be used to help spot, or even prevent child abuse.

Child Abuse Prevention Requires Education
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and a local advocacy group is hoping to bring attention to the issue in Starke County.
Members of the local group Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) say they’re hosting a candlelight vigil at the end of April to help provide information to community members about the issue.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
This is a time to devote to do everything we can do prevent abuse and to support families and children. That includes making resources available for quality childcare, affordable health services, parenting education resources, substance abuse programs and mental health programs.
Number of Domestic Violence Calls up in Starke County
The number of domestic violence calls to local police departments have slightly increased in the past few months. We asked Ruth Matsey, the President of the Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, what she has been seeing in Starke County.
“What we’re seeing a lot of in Starke County is the form of child abuse which is neglect, whether it’s due to financial circumstances or a lot of times it’s with meth,” said Matsey. “Kids are being left unsupervised, plus they’re around all of the dangerous chemicals.”
