At least one of the popular trade programs offered through the North Central Vocational Educational Cooperative could be in jeopardy as participating corporations weigh the pros and cons of a balanced school calendar. Kyle Elliott is instructor for the building trades program based at Culver Community High School. He says students from Knox and North Judson-San Pierre are also enrolled in the program. Culver BPA Students Gearing Up for First Fundraisers

Forty-five students at Culver Community High School are getting ready for this year’s Business Professionals of America district competition, and according to BPA Advisor Gene Baker, this year’s membership is the highest he’s seen in the three years he’s spent as the school’s BPA advisor. With nine more kids signed up for the organization than last year, Baker said it’s the best turnout the school has seen in a number of years.

Baker explained BPA is a national organization that aims to equip students with the workplace skills they need to succeed through a variety of different events and competitions.

Culver High School BPA Students Preparing for Nationals

The Culver Community High School Business Professionals of America members are gearing up to attend the BPA National Leadership Conference in Orland, Fla., May 8 – 12. Two students will be attending the conference, having advanced to Nationals from the State Leadership Conference in Indianapolis.

Justin Croy earned second place in Computer Modeling at State while Janele VanDePutte placed fourth at State to advance to the National competition at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort.

Matt Hurford Wins State Title

Culver Community high school senior wrestler Matt Hurford completed his undefeated season with a state championship. Hurford (47-0) defeated Jonah Zorniger (27-5) of Avon 15-7 in the first round of the tournament, he then went on to defeat Katrell Moss (34-8) of Warren Central 7-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round, Matt defeated Brian Wagner (41-6) of New Palestine 3-0 to advance to the finals where he defeated Jake Masengale (40-3) of Perry Meridian 9-4. Matt’s state championship is the second for Culver wrestling in the last three years, joining 2011 graduate Jeremiah Harvey. He also joins an elite group of state champions in the Kankakee Valley: Chris Kasten (Winamac Wrestling ’04 and ’05), Shane Crawford (Winamac Track ’07), Oregon-Davis (Boys and Girls Basketball ’07), Jeremiah Harvey (Culver Wrestling ’11). Congratulations to Matt Hurford of Culver Community high school, this year’s 182lb state champion!

Many Activities are Scheduled Saturday and Sunday in the Kankakee Valley!

Even though Christmas Eve is a few days off, many children in our area will get some gifts early. The Starke County Abate organization will be handing out toys, clothing and food items to 90 families at the Bass Lake Golf Course on Saturday. “It will be at the Bass Lake Golf Course,” said Abate President, Terry Young. “We have 90 families that will be coming out this year. They were all sent out invitations to come. There are 240 kids and all the families will have a turkey and all kinds of gifts. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will also be there.” When it comes to a big heart for children, the 290 members of Abate are in the forefront.
