The community of Culver is celebrating the 100th birthday of its Carnegie Library with the ribbon cutting of an exhibit designed to keep future generations excited about reading. The town’s StoryWalk consists of 18 stations along Lake Maxinkuckee in the community park. Each houses a different laminated page from a children’s storybook to encourage families to stroll through the park share a story. The Culver-Union Township Public Library and Culver Park Board teamed up on the project. The first book is “The Ice Cream Hotel” by local author Jack Johnston. StoryWalk books in the Park will change every two weeks from June through September. Continue reading

Maxinkuckee Players Schedule “Hello, Dolly!” Auditions
Aspiring thespians can audition this weekend for a part in this summer’s Maxinkuckee Players production of “Hello, Dolly!” Auditions will take place tomorrow from 9 a.m. until noon and 1 until 5 p.m. EDT and Sunday from 2 until 6 p.m. at the Culver Community High School auditorium. Culver Relay for Life Set for Tonight
The Culver Relay for Life event kicks off today with the survivor dinner at 5 p.m. ET on the campus of the Culver Military Academy.
The committee has been working hard to bring in more donations to help fight cancer. So far, 39 teams with 349 participants have raised $27,741 toward the cause. More donations will be accepted during the event that runs through Saturday morning at 6 a.m.
Several fundraisers are planned throughout the evening.
Former Marshall County Man Found Guilty, Could Face 50 Years in Prison
A former Marshall County man could face up to 50 years in prison after being found guilty in a two-day trial in Marshall County Superior Court.
Russell A. Prosser, of South Bend, formerly of Culver, was charged with two counts of serious violent felon in possession of a firearm. A jury found Prosser guilty of one count of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felony, a Class B felony. He was found not guilty on a count of possession of a flint lock pistol.
The case began in December of 2013 when officers found Prosser sleeping in a truck in the McDonald’s parking lot in LaPaz. He was a suspect in a case where several thefts occurred from vehicles in Culver. Guns were spotted by police inside the vehicle. A warrant to search the vehicle was obtained, and the weapons were confiscated. He was known by police to have been convicted of an armed robbery, and it was illegal for Prosser to possess any firearm.
Culver Winter Festival Set for This Weekend
The community of Culver is coming together this weekend for the Culver Winter Festival.
The event kicks off Friday with the lighting of the ice sculptures at 6 p.m. and the Cupid’s Crawl until 9 p.m. The Cupid’s Crawl is a chance for festival attendees to shop and dine at local establishments to win prizes. An artist class begins at 5:30 p.m.
The Lion’s Club will host a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., an ice carving demonstration is at noon and a free ice fishing camp for kids is at 1 p.m. A snow fort construction class begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Kankakee Valley Broadcasting Celebrates MAX 98.3 FM Launch
Join the staff of Kankakee Valley Broadcasting for today’s ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of WYMR-FM, MAX 98.3. The 6,000 watt radio station is licensed in Culver and Plymouth and is a sister station to K99.3 WKVI FM and Kountry KVI 1520 AM, both of which are licensed in Knox. The stations share an air staff and news department and play a similar mix of hit music from the 1970s through present day. Continue reading
Kidney Transplant Brings Culver Students Together
Students at Culver Elementary hope to help a former classmate with a bit of fundraising.
The student is currently thought to be in 3rd grade at Plymouth Community Schools, but is in need of a kidney transplant due to a kidney disease which he was diagnosed with. A “GoFundMe” account has been set-up to help raise funds which will assist the student in meeting certain financial obligations, they also want to people to know how do you get kidney stones and how you can prevent them.

Culver Schedules Snow Make-Up Day
Students in the Culver Community School Corporation will be in class this Friday, Feb. 6, weather permitting. Superintendent Vicki McGuire says it’s a make-up day for Monday, Feb. 2 when school was canceled due to snow. Culver Fire Department Sells Old Squad Truck
The Monterey Fire Department is purchasing Culver Fire Department’s old squad truck for $50,000. The money will go toward the purchase of Culver’s new squad truck expected to arrive later this month.
Fatal Fire Prompts Smoke Detector Donation Drive
Smoke detectors will soon be handed out to residents of Culver and the surrounding community. Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield told the town council last night his department is collecting smoke detectors to give out. Their action was prompted by a recent fatal house fire in which the home’s lone occupant died of smoke inhalation because the home lacked a smoke detector.

The Culver Community School Board learned this week that the corporation recently received the School Performance Award from the state that is just over $35,000.
