The Culver Town Council this week held their public hearing for the 2014 budget and Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim explained to the board that the proposed budget is just under $2 million, coming in at $1,945,026 – an increase over last year’s budget, which came in at $1,847,913. She said most of the total increase, which came out to $97,113, is a result of an anticipated rise in healthcare benefits costs.
Culver Museum is Moving and Will Include New Culver Visitor Center
The Culver Museum, which is part of the Center for Culver History and research center of the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, will be moving.
The museum has been located in the basement of the Culver-Union Township Public Library and will be closed beginning Oct. 12 for three or four weeks to move to the new location at 101 W. Main St. George Waksmulski said it took a while to find a location, but they found a perfect fit for the museum and a new visitor center.
Culver Woodcraft Camp Promises “Spooky Fun” During Halloween Camp
The Culver Woodcraft Camp is offering a “frightfully fun time” on Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Culver Summer Schools & Camps. The organization is hosting its annual overnight Halloween Camp for children ages 7-12 on Oct. 19 and 20, featuring pumpkin carving, hayrides, campfires, a costume ball, camp activities, trick-or-treating, a haunted museum, games and much more.
Children will arrive by 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, and camp will end at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20.
Campers should bring bedding – preferably a sleeping bag and pillow since it may be chilly in the cabins at night – bathroom items, appropriate clothing for the weather, a costume for the party, a flashlight, and camera.

Culver Fall Clean-Up Day Scheduled for Oct. 12
The fall town-wide clean-up day for the town of Culver is scheduled for next Saturday, Oct. 12. According to town manager David Schoeff, this gives residents the opportunity to get rid of some of their junk, old electronics or other items that would otherwise prove problematic to dispose of.
Schoeff said dumpsters will be located at the north water tower on Lakeshore Drive, offering a free drop-off site for residents who wish to unload of some of their items like televisions, air-conditioning units that have had the freon removed, and other items to help clean up the neighborhood. He explained the electronics are taken to the Marshall County Solid Waste District.
Schoeff said it’s typically a pretty successful program, and the dumpsters will be available from 8 a.m. to noon.
Effects of Little Savages Lives On in Culver
“Little Savages” may have wrapped up filming in Culver, but the experience of having a little bit of Hollywood in the Marshall County town lingers on.
The movie was filmed in various parts of Culver as the film crew followed the pursuits of the Savage children and their friends as they set off on an adventure to find hidden treasure.
Culver School Board Holds Public Budget Hearing; Passes Plans
The Culver Community School Board this week held a public hearing on their budget for 2014, as well as the plans regarding capital projects and bus replacement. Superintendent Brad Schuldt said the board heard no comments from the public and proceeded to adopt the resolution for the three-year capital projects plan that will cover 2014–2016.
Culver Schools Report Positive ISTEP+ Results
The Culver Community School Corporation reports continue growth in their ISTEP+ results, according to Superintendent Brad Schuldt, who explained the corporation reported the highest scores they’ve ever had in combined English/Language Arts and Math scores. In addition, the number of kids passing the test at the elementary school is the highest its been as well, with the highest percentage they’ve had at the high school passing the end-of-course assessments as well.
Culver Town-Wide Garage Sale Sept. 27 and 28
The Culver town-wide garage sale is set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28. While there are no yard sale permits required to host a sale, there is a benefit to holding a garage sale during the town-wide yard sale dates as more people will be in the area checking out the sales. He said the company will lead the board in the search and interview processes at a cost of $6000, and Schuldt explained the board held an initial meeting with the company on Aug. 27.
Stars, Filmmakers of Movie Filmed in Culver to Participate in Faith and Film Event
The filmmakers and stars of the movie “Little Savages” that is wrapping up filming in the Culver area will be partnering with local clergy to hold a panel discussion focused on the topic of “Faith, Film and Contemporary Life.” The panel will be held today beginning at 11 a.m. ET at the west pavilion in Culver’s town park.
Stars of the film include several well-known Disney stars, including Kenton Duty and Katherine McNamara. The film, which is being produced by Bearfuit Films, cents around the charming lake town of Culver where a boy genius and his sister race against bullies to find a treasure hidden by an eccentric philanthropist.

Casting Call for “Little Savages” Turns Out Quite the Crowd
The casting call for the soon-to-be-filmed movie “Little Savages” turned out an overwhelming amount of aspiring actors to the town of Culver. James Simmons, producer for the film, said people came out from Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit and all over the local area. On top of the local turnout, Simmons said they’ve already signed a number of actors of Disney fame to the film as well.
Simmons said they hadn’t been expected such an amazing turnout.
Three Injured in Early Morning Culver Crash
One person was airlifted from the scene of a single-vehicle wreck early this morning near Lake Maxinkuckee. It happened in the 2800 Block of East Shore Drive, according to our reporting partners at WNDU-TV. A vehicle struck a cement wall or embankment, and the occupants had to be cut from it. Two other people were taken to an area hospital for treatment. All three were male, but we don’t have their names or ages yet or any information about the extent of their injuries or where they were taken for treatment.
Bearfuit Films Still Filling Roles for Film “Little Savages”
With preproduction still underway for the movie “Little Savages” to be filmed in Culver, Bearfruit Films has announced that they’ve had several exciting developments occur with the project this week. With casting still underway, the company said they’ve got some great stars already lined up for the film.
Toxicology Results Released in Lake Max Drowning Death
Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the July 14 drowning death of a 22-year-old Plymouth man, according to toxicology results released by the Marshall County Coroner’s office. Valentin Sirghi, 22, was swimming with a friend near the public beach at Lake Maxinkuckee when he went under water. Rescue teams searched the area for about an hour before they found his body. Sirghi was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. Final autopsy results are pending, but preliminary indications are that Sirghi died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning.

Area Coach and Players Participate in North/South All-Star Game
The Kankakee Valley was well represented at the 46th annual North/South All-Star football game. Winamac coach Tim Roth was honored with being named the head coach of the North team which also included Zach Shidler of Winamac and Matt Hurford of Culver. On an incredibly warm evening both Hurford and Shidler saw a considerable amount of playing time throughout the game, which ended with the South winning 27-6. While Hurford played his usual defensive end position, Shidler lined up as a wide receiver and had a pass reception in the 4th quarter. Despite the outcome of the game, Roth, Shidler, and Hurford were all smiles afterwards and acknowledged that it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that they will never forget. Continue reading
Preliminary Autopsy Results Revealed in Lake Maxinkuckee Drowning Incident
An autopsy has found that 22-year-old Valentin Sirghi of Plymouth died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning in an incident at Lake Maxinkuckee Sunday evening.
That preliminary result was confirmed by Marshall County Deputy Coroners Ann Leed and Brigette Hite. The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Joseph Prahlow, Board-Certified Pathologist in Mishawaka.
Culver Public Library to Hold “Launches of Lake Maxinkuckee” Program
The Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver will soon be hosting a program detailing the history of the “Launches of Lake Maxinkuckee” at the Culver Public Library. The program, scheduled for Saturday, July 13, begins at 10 a.m. in the large meeting room.
