The Hamlet Town Council members voted Wednesday night in favor of forming the Hamlet-Davis Township Fire Protection Territory. The Davis Township Advisory Board members voted in favor of the formation of the Territory in a meeting Tuesday night, so the Territory will move forward.

Open Seats in Starke County for 2018 Elections
According to Starke County Election Deputy Clerk Crystal McCarty-Taylor, people can file for a declaration of candidacy starting today anytime between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and they have until February 9th at noon to file.
Interested individuals must come into the Starke County Clerk’s Office to file. She added that no exceptions will be made if the February deadline is missed.
Officials up for election in Starke County include the County Sheriff, Assessor, Coroner, Recorder and Auditor as well as the Prosecuting Attorney and Circuit Court Clerk. Elections will also be held for the County Commissioners in District 2 which includes California, Center and Davis Townships. Continue reading
Yellowstone Trail Fest Seeks Site for Beer Garden
Next year’s Yellowstone Trail Fest may include a beer garden. Festival President Larry Jernas discussed the idea with the Hamlet Town Council last week. He said a beer garden would not be allowed at the Starke County Fairgrounds, where most Yellowstone Trail Fest activities take place, so organizers are looking for another site nearby.
Property Taxes Will Increase to Build Hamlet Fire Station
Davis Township property owners who live outside the Hamlet town limits will see a property tax increase of about 14-cents per $100 of assessed valuation to pay for the new 9,300 square foot, $750,000 fire station. That’s an estimate provided by officials with accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates during Monday’s public hearing on the project. Continue reading

Public Hearing Set for Fire Station Project in Davis Township
A public hearing is set for Monday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. CT to hear comments on a proposed lease between the Davis Township Building Corporation and Davis Township for a new fire station.
The project includes the construction of a fire station that will house eight fire trucks and an adjacent space for a community center. The new fire station will be located just east of the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet off of Indiana Street.
Tax Levy Question to Appear on Starke County May Ballot
A tax levy referendum will appear on the May Primary ballot for voters in the Oregon and Davis Townships in Starke County.
The referendum is asking voters to approve a property tax rate increase to help create more funds to keep the school corporation operating the way it is now. The increase will not exceed $.19 on each $100 of assessed valuation and it will be in addition to all other property tax levies imposed by the School Corporation.
