Heroin Dealer Sentenced in U.S. District Court

DEA: Fentanyl is a Threat to Health and Public Safety
The Drug Enforcement Agency has issued a nationwide alert on fentanyl as a threat to health and public safety.
According to the DEA, Fentanyl can be laced with heroin and when produced in clandestine labs can have an effect 100 times more powerful than morphine and 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin. Drug incidents and overdoses related to fentanyl are occurring and the DEA is warning the general public that Fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin and an accidental inhalation of airborne powder could occur.

LaPorte Man Arrested For Possession of Cocaine
A LaPorte man is jailed on a $100,000 bond accused of dealing in cocaine. Decarlo Knighten, 35, was taken into custody without incident at his State Street home Monday by officers from the La Porte County Metro Operations Unit and United States Drug Enforcement Administration. They obtained arrest and search warrants for his home following an ongoing investigation into the sale and distribution of narcotics in the LaPorte area.
LaPorte County Drug Bust Leads to Two Arrests
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the seizure of a significant amount of drugs, guns and cash from a home in the 5600 East block of Nappanee Trail in the community of Saugany Lake in LaPorte County.
More than 100 pounds of marijuana, approximately 5.5 grams of suspected cocaine, and 1.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine were found Sept. 21 after a search warrant was conducted by the LaPorte County Metro Operations Units, the DEA, and Elkhart County Interdiction and Covert Enforcement team. Three handguns were confiscated along with $144,628 in cash. One of the handguns was reported stolen in Michigan.
DEA, State Police To Partner In Prescription Drug Take Back
The DEA and the Indiana State Police are partnering in an effort to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft in a program entitled “Prescription Drug Take Back.”
This event allows everyone to drop off any expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs at an Indiana State Police Post on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time. This is a free and anonymous service with no questions asked. This program is intended for liquid and pill medications only; no new or used needles will be accepted.
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department is taking unwanted prescriptions this week through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prescription medication will also be taken Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Oscar Cowen asks that you be diligent in taking part in this program to help eradicate the abuse of prescription drugs.
1500 Pounds of Medications Collected During Take Back Initiative
The Indiana State Police and the Starke County Sheriff’s Department recently participated in a drug take back initiative, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Statewide, police collected more than 1500 pounds of unused or expired medications. The DEA collected 21 pounds of prescription medication from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, and the Bremen Post collected 150 pounds of medication.
Prescription Drug Take Back Event Scheduled for April 28th
The Drug Enforcement Agency is sponsoring the fourth nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative on Saturday, April 28th. The Indiana State Police is partnering with the DEA in this event and expired, unused, and unwanted prescriptions can be disposed of at any Indiana State Police post on the 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. local time.
Two Arrested in LaPorte County on Dog Fighting Charges
The LaPorte County Metro Drug Task Force and the DEA have arrested two LaPorte County residents on animal fighting charges.
Police say federal and local arrest warrants were issued and George Wedow and Lisa Daube were arrested on Friday, January 13th at their residence at 5589 N. 600 West in LaPorte County. The investigation revealed a large dog fighting operation involving 12 dogs and dog fighting equipment at that address. 70 pounds of processed marijuana was also confiscated from the residence. Police also searched a Grovertown residence and found 19 more dogs.
Environmental Collection Event in Starke County a Success
The 2011 Environmental event at the Starke County Highway Garage was a big success. A record number of vehicles passed through during the four day event that occurred Wednesday, April 27th through Saturday, April 30th.
750 vehicles came through where residents were able to dispose of their materials. 450 of those vehicles came through on Saturday. 1,500 gallons of oil was disposed of, 6 semi trailers of tires were hauled away, and several semi loads of appliances and computers were taken from the Highway Garage. Two semi loads of hazardous waste was collected.
Starke County Environmental Collection Event Begins Four Day Run
The Starke County Environmental Management District’s Collection Event begins today at the Starke County Highway Garage. Household appliances, computers, televisions, fluorescent lamps and PCB ballasts, and tires will be accepted from 2:30-5:30 p.m. CT today through Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
On Saturday, April 30th, household hazardous waste will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. only. Flammable liquids, pesticides/herbicides, corrosive liquids/acids, non-conforming waste, paints, toxic solids, motor oil and antifreeze are some of the hazardous chemicals that will be accepted. Chicago Man Arrested in LaPorte County on Cocaine Charges
A Chicago man is in the LaPorte County Jail after police arrested him on cocaine charges.
The LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit learned that a large shipment of cocaine was destined for LaPorte County. Investigators rapidly gathered information and learned that the shipment was to be delivered to a retail parking lot in Michigan City via automobile. Investigators from the Michigan City Street Crimes Unit, the DEA and Metro operations detectives began surveillance and the targeted suspect vehicle was located and stopped in a parking lot. Police came upon the vehicle and a Michigan City K9 alerted to drugs in a compartment in the vehicle. Investigators conducted a search and found one kilogram of cocaine inside the compartment. Officers also seized more than $30,000 in United States currency.
