Seventh graders at Winamac Middle School are learning some higher-order thinking skills through problem-solving. The Eastern Pulaski School Board learned about the school’s Project Based Learning class last week from teacher Melissa Newman and students Chase Keller, Luke Dickinson, and Josh McCarnan.
The Winamac High School Art Department has gotten a $1,000 financial boost, thanks to the local chapter of Psi Iota Xi. The philanthropic sorority says the donation is meant to benefit or enhance students’ art experience, under the direction of teacher Natalie Dickinson.
Whether the awning in front of Winamac High School should be torn down or refurbished was a topic of debate during Monday’s Eastern Pulaski School Board meeting.
The Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation is taking steps to protect its equipment from electrical problems. On Monday, the school board approved the installation of a phase loss protection system. “Last year, if you recall, we had a problem with storms and power, and when you knock out one phase on a three-phase system, you can basically have some damage, which we did – $14,000, $15,000 worth, I think, something like that,” explained Superintendent Dan Foster. “We did go to insurance and we got a lot of that back, but this is a way to protect that.”
A suicide awareness and prevention policy was adopted by the Eastern Pulaski School Board Monday. Among other things, it requires all school employees to undergo training on how recognize the risk factors and how to respond. For students, educational materials are to be integrated into their health classes. “That’s something that we’ll be talking about in pretty good detail in coming months,” Superintendent Dan Foster said, “with Rachel’s Challenge and some things coming down the pipe, plus some training that we have to do through the state legislature.”
Local school officials continue reevaluating their safety procedures, following last month’s school shooting in Florida. The Eastern Pulaski School Board got an update Monday from the corporation’s school safety specialists, Middle School Principal Ryan Dickinson and High School Principal Rick DeFries, along with Chris Schramm from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.

Rachel’s Challenge is coming to Eastern Pulaski Schools Tuesday. The program aims to reduce school bullying and violence, and encourage acts of kindness.
The Eastern Pulaski Schools campus will get major paving and sidewalk upgrades in the coming months. The school board awarded a $2.4-million construction bid to Rieth-Riley Construction Company Monday.
Reducing school violence and bullying is the goal of a program coming to Eastern Pulaski Schools next month.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board approved amendments to a couple school policies this week. Superintendent Dan Foster says the policy regarding the use of seclusion and restraints got a minor update. “What that was is mostly for special education students, who sometimes pose a threat to themselves and/or others, if they become violent,” he explains. The Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation is getting a couple new school buses. The school board voted Monday to buy the two buses through Midwest Transit. “We had approval for a 78-passenger bus and then a 48-passenger bus,” explains Superintendent Dan Foster, “and that replaces one of our smaller buses that we use right now. It goes daily to Logansport. Actually, surprisingly, the prices weren’t much different for a 48-passenger to a 78-passenger.”
