Starke and Pulaski counties’ health rankings took a bit of a hit in 2021, after years of modest improvements. The 2021 County Health Rankings were released earlier this spring by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute.

Continue readingWith the weather warming up, farmers have begun getting their fields ready for spring planting, according to Purdue Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Educator Phil Woolery. “Farmers are starting to do a little bit of field work, if they’re doing some tillage,” he says. “Ones that use cover crops, they’re going to be looking for an opportunity, when the weather gets right, for terminating those and then for planting.”

Warm weather is helping to push this year’s harvest season along, according to Purdue Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Educator Phil Woolery. “Things are picking up pretty fast now,” he says. “We’ve had some kind of warm and dry weather that’s helped dry crops down, which has helped speed up harvest on corn and soybeans, helping things mature faster. We had some real warm weather that helped with crops growing faster, as well, so earlier than average harvest start time.”
The Pulaski County Advisory Plan Commission has recommended banning wind turbines. The vote drew a standing ovation from a packed room of local residents and landowners at the Star City Community Building Monday. It came after a public hearing on proposed changes to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance that would have significantly restricted wind turbine development.
