The latest Weekly Influenza Report from the Indiana Department of Health shows that flu activity increased sharply in the final weeks of 2017, resulting in multiple flu-related deaths.
The report from December 21st stated that the influenza-like-illness (ILI) activity code was minimal with only 2 deaths reported. On the very next report from December 29th, the ILI activity code had been changed to high with a total of 9 deaths reported. Continue reading
It’s Never to Early to Get a Flu Shot
Local pharmacies and health departments are getting ready for the flu season. Flu shots will be available soon.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect against influenza. The flu vaccine is said to reduce doctor’s visits and missed work and school. Those who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications, including the elderly, infants, pregnant women and those who suffer from certain health conditions, should get a flu shot early.

Flu Shots Available at Local Health Departments
Health officials urge you to get a flu shot to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Pulaski County Health Nurse Andrea Keller said the number of cases of fever and respiratory illness has increased. Keller told WKVI News that the flu shot is the number one defense against the virus. She noted that there are plenty of flu shots available at the Pulaski County Health Department. She administers shots Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET.
Starke County Health Nurse Frank Lynch encourages patrons to stop in the office to get a flu shot. He stated that he has an ample supply of vaccinations. To help prevent the spread of the flu, wash hands often and thoroughly, sneeze and cough into a tissue and stay home if you are sick.
Starke County Health Department Schedules Flu Shot Clinic
The Starke County Health Department will conduct a flu shot clinic on Wednesday afternoon in their office on the first floor of the courthouse. Vaccines will be available free of charge for children with Medicaid, no insurance or insurance that doesn’t cover shots. Adult flu shots cost $20. Flu Shot Clinics Set for This Week at Pulaski County Health Department
Walk-in flu shot clinics have been set for this week at the Pulaski County Health Department.
You may get a seasonal flu shot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and Thursday, Oct. 3. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, you may get a flu shot from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET. Flu vaccines will be $20 for adults and $20 for children.
Officials at the health department remind you that a claim with an insurance company will not be made. You may check with the health department to see if your child qualifies for publicly funded vaccines through the State.

Starke County Health Department Holding Flu Shot Clinic Today
The Starke County Health Department will hold a flu shot clinic today from 1:30–3:30 p.m. The clinic will be conducted in the health department office on the first floor of the courthouse.
Starke County Health Nurse Frank Lynch said flu vaccinations for adults and children will be administered at a cost of $20. Children who are covered under Medicaid, have no insurance or insurance that doesn’t cover vaccines, can be vaccinated at the Health Department. If a flu shot is covered under insurance, that child will need to go to his/her physician’s office to get a flu shot.
