The Hamlet Zoning Board has reopened discussions about paying the town’s building inspector. Frank Lonigro says he’ll no longer do the job for free, according to Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts. He first raised concerns during the board’s January meeting, but members wanted to look at restructuring the town’s permit fee structure before offering a pay rate.

Hamlet Town Board Reorganizes, Sells Vacant Lots
David Kesvormas was re-elected president of the Hamlet Town Board, when it met Wednesday night. The other members of the board are Brian Earnest and Frank Lonigro.
The board accepted a bid of $12,000 for two vacant lots on West Davis Street, east of Rannells Funeral Home from Kris Rannells of the mortuary. In the offer, Rannells said he plans to develop the properties into a gravel parking lot with ADA compliant sidewalks. Continue reading
Oregon-Davis Schools Considering Active Shooter App
The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is considering the addition of a smartphone app to quickly notify law enforcement of an active shooter or other emergency. School Guard creates a direct link between teachers, staff and nearby law enforcement officers. The app has a panic button that speed dials 911 and instantly sends an alert directly to nearby law enforcement officers with the companion free Hero 911 app on their phones. Continue reading
Oregon-Davis School Board Praises School Resource Officers
Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Greg Briles praised the newly installed school resource officers for their efforts in school safety.
Briles told the school board members this week that Hamlet Town Marshal Frank Lonigro and Patrolman Kyle Hinds have been working to create plans in case of an emergency.
Oregon-Davis Schools Conduct Security Drill
The Oregon-Davis School Corporation has considerable room for improvement when it comes to following school safety protocol. School and law enforcement officials put their response to the test yesterday with an unannounced exercise involving an off-duty state trooper dressed in street clothes attempting to get into the high school. He walked in through a door in the shop area that was propped open and strolled around the school for a few minutes before a teacher notified the office and a lockdown notice was issued.
Party Conventions Scheduled in Hamlet
Party conventions for both the Democratic and the Republican parties have been scheduled in Hamlet. The purpose of this convention is to select the nominees for all town offices for which more than one candidate has filed.
