To help residents keep meters and pipes from freezing up this winter, North Judson officials recently issued a reminder to leave water trickling when temperatures are consistently below 30 degrees.
Continue readingA recent stretch of cold weather has uncovered some plumbing issues at the Pulaski County Transfer Station. A suspected frozen drain pipe has had the employee restroom out of service, according to Manager Brad Bonnell. “The toilet is working at the transfer station, but it’s very, very slow,” he told the county commissioners last week. “So we might be gaining or we might be losing. I’m not sure.” Plumbers should be called immediately to fix blocked drains.

Winter weather may be weeks away, but municipalities throughout the state of Indiana have provided resources for residents to protect their water pipes from freezing temperatures.
With the cold temperatures this March, it doesn’t quite feel like spring. That’s especially true for five homes in Knox that still suffer from frozen pipes after the harsh winter, and one resident approached the city council this week asking for some kind of solution to her ice-clogged pipes.
The Knox Board of Public Works did not have a quorum but heard reports from department heads on issues Wednesday morning.
Knox Water Superintendent Todd Gardner said about 50 percent of the frozen pipes reported have been thawed and they’re working on more as the days go by. The first section of pipes to freeze was along Spruce Drive and all but one person has water flowing to the residence.
When temperatures dip below freezing, homeowners should take simple precautions to keep the pipes intact and avoid pouring thousands of dollars into home repairs.
Ensure water tanks and pipes are insulated. Pipes in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls are more vulnerable to freezing. Let the water run. Letting both hot and cold lines of a faucet drip in the extreme cold can prevent a pipe from bursting. A running faucet relieves pressure between the faucet and the ice. No pressure means no bursting. Also, keep bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors open during a cold spell to let warm air circulate around the pipes. Seal any leaks in your home, attic, basement or crawl space that might allow cold air inside where pipes are located.
