The Pulaski County Courthouse is expected to be discussed during tonight’s county commissioners meeting. Three renovation options, ranging from just under $4.9 million up to almost $8.6 million were recently presented to the county council and commissioners. Council Member Mike Tiede is scheduled to discuss the courthouse with the commissioners tonight.

Continue readingAn agreement to leave Swayze Camp Lane as it currently is but make it an official Pulaski County Road has apparently fallen through. The gravel access lane runs from County Road 400 South to the Swayze Camp subdivision along the Tippecanoe River south of Winamac. However, it apparently drifted out of its easement and onto a neighboring property, leading the landowner to close it off entirely.

Funding arrangements for Highway Department equipment and jail repairs were considered by the Pulaski County Council last week. Council members agreed to transfer money within the Cumulative Bridge Fund to allow the Highway Department to continue to rent a mini-excavator until the end of the year.

A stretch of Pulaski County Road 400 North will soon get a lower speed limit. The county council voted four-to-two Monday to reduce the speed limit to 35 miles per hour between U.S. 421 and County Road 1400 West, and make 400 and 1400 a four-way stop. The speed limit change had been approved by the county commissioners last month.

The Pulaski County highway superintendent is stepping down at the end of the month. Terry Ruff’s resignation was accepted by the county commissioners Monday.

The Pulaski County Highway Department is making progress on its summer street projects. Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff gave an update to the county commissioners last week. “Gary’s been working on the roads like mad, I guess,” he said. “They got 20 miles of blade mix done. They started sealing today.”
As the weather continues to fluctuate between warm and cold, it can unfortunately cause ideal conditions for pothole formation.
Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler explained why the damp, dynamic conditions can result in these unwanted road hazards.
Ritzler said, “Potholes generally form from water on the road and it gets into the cracks on the roadway and then as the water turns to ice and it expands and then contracts and that expansion and contraction over time, causes the structure of the pavement to deteriorate.” Continue reading
