Appointments to the board of zoning appeals, advisory plan commission, and Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission will be discussed during tonight’s joint council and commissioners meeting.

A recent impact grant awarded by the Starke County Community Foundation is helping local emergency personnel save lives.
Starke County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) used the $14,350 they received from the SCCF to purchase a LUCAS CPR Device, and paid for one year of maintenance for the medical apparatus. The technology performs non-stop CPR, freeing the EMS responder to treat and transport the patient to the emergency room. Continue reading

Starke County Economic Development Foundation to Hold Community Retreat
The Starke County Economic Development Foundation will be holding a community retreat at their office in Knox on Tuesday, March 20th from 7:30 a.m. until noon CT.
Interim Executive Director Larry Wickert spoke to the North Judson Town Council members about the session during their meeting Monday night. Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation Now Accepting Grant Applications
Grant proposals are now being accepted for the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation. The application deadline for the first round of 10 grants is January 31st.
Last year, multiple local schools agreed to partner with the organization to provide assistance to underprivileged children in grades K-12.
Individuals have the ability to request funds to help with things such as special projects, field trip fees, school supplies and other scholastic items. Continue reading
Applications Now Open for Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program
Organizations working to improve local waterways can apply for up to $50,000 in federal matching grants. The Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program gives local governments, schools, and non-profit organizations money to improve water quality and enhance the habitat for local wildlife. Additionally, projects must engage the public, have measurable results, involve at least five partner organizations, and include a plan to sustain the project beyond the grant period.
SCCF Grants Awarded Year-Round, Funds Still Available for Interested Non-Profits
This year the Starke County Community Foundation eliminated deadlines for their grant applications which allows them to accept applications and award grants all throughout the year. Nearly $23,000 of community grant money remains available to Starke County non-profits who submit grant applications to the SCCF.
So far this year, the SCCF has awarded more than $284,000, with around $12,000 going toward community grants. The foundation is looking to award the remaining $22,900 by the end of 2017. Continue reading

Winamac Continues Discussions With Greenspace Group
The Winamac Town Council plans to further discussions on a group that they say needs better communication.
During tonight’s meeting officials with Winamac Greenspace, otherwise known as the Town’s Tree Commission, will be meeting with the Town Council to plan how to better communication with the Town and a conservation and development group.

Applications For Starke County Grants Available
Several grant opportunities are available this year through the Starke County Community Foundation.
The Foundation points to the grants as a way to support community organizations throughout the year. According to a press release, four of the grants are designed to enhance a few projects.
