Hamlet Town Council Approves Budget Cuts

Hamlet Fall 5The Hamlet Town Council last week made cuts to the 2016 budget in anticipation of their 2017 spending plan. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts advised after meeting with officials from the Department of Local Government Finance that the town needs to zero out its general fund cushion in order to avoid a state-mandated cut. Downtown Revitalization Projects to Start in Hamlet

Hamlet Fall 5The downtown revitalization program for Hamlet was given a green light last night for starting Phase I of the project. This step includes some 200-feet of new sidewalk and curb and the installation of three new antique street lights. In another improvement program, a 50-50 sidewalk and handicap ramp was approved for installation at the Hamlet American Legion. Continue reading

Fireworks Fundraiser Planned, Parade Forms Available at Mayor’s Office

 Plans are shaping up for the Independence Day celebration in downtown Knox. A parade down Main Street into Wythogan Park on Saturday, July 2nd will kick off the day of events leading up to the county fireworks display. Mayor Dennis Estok and the Knox City Council have opted to move them from the airport to the park this year.

Parade applications are available at city hall for anyone who would like to have a float or vehicle and can be picked up during business hours. Continue reading

Hamlet Hamstrung Regarding Railroad Safety Enforcement

 
 

The Town of Hamlet’s several railroad crossings were a major discussion item on Wednesday night’s town board agenda when a resident complained about rail cars parked too near crossings and entire trains abandoned during crew changes.

The Jefferson street CF&E crossing was spotlighted as a particularly dangerous to automobiles and their drivers whose views of oncoming trains are often obstructed. Continue reading

Hog Farm Issue Dominates Hamlet Council Meeting

Hamlet Fall 5The Hamlet Town Board took action last night to draft a letter to the Starke County Plan Commission and the Starke County Board of Commissioners expressing its support of a county zoning ordinance, adopted last fall, providing the City of Knox and the Towns of North Judson and Hamlet with a two-mile buffer zone concerning such agricultural projects as the proposed 8,000-head hog raising project south of Hamlet.
