Now that Starke County is taking legal action against the owners of the SYSCO property, Hamlet Town Council President Dave Kesvormas wants the town to join in. The complaint filed by the county in Starke Circuit Court accuses the owners of “unjust enrichment,” after the county invested at least $1.6 million in site improvements with the understanding that a new facility would be built, bringing about 300 jobs.

Efforts to bring murals, artisan markets, and a scale model of the solar system to Starke County have gotten a boost, thanks to the Lilly Endowment’s GIFT VII program. A new home may finally be coming to a vacant lot in Hamlet. For months, the town council has been trying to get a home built on a piece of town-owned land at Lincoln and Pearl streets. Last week, council members agreed to sell the lot to Finish Line Construction. The company plans to build a 1,700-square-foot, three-bedroom home in the next six to nine months.
