Bridge Repair To Start Today on 700 East
A LaPorte-based contractor will begin repairs on the bridge over the Yellow River on County Road 700 East today. It’s been closed since a tree floating down the river struck one of the bridge supports earlier this year, rendering the structure unstable. Continue reading

The Oregon-Davis School Board is working toward the start of school and the members are expected to make several employment and transfer decisions in tonight’s meeting. A recommendation of a non-certified benefit package will also be decided.

INDOT to Close SR 23 for Chip Sealing
Motorists who take State Road 23 through Walkerton will need to find a new route for the next few days. INDOT is closing the road between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 to perform chip and fog sealing. The process preserves the road surface. INDOT officials stress the work is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions are not ideal. Southbound motorists can take U.S. 6 south to U.S. 35 and east to U.S. 30 to get around the closure. Northbound motorists can use the opposite route. Continue reading
Local Kids Compete in the Bass Lake Pageant Today
The Bass Lake Festival is next weekend and but the fun starts early this weekend with the annual pageant.
Boys and girls from ages 3 to 6 will be competing for the title of Little Miss or Little Mister Bass Lake. Ladies from the ages of 14 to 18 are vying for the title of Miss Bass Lake.
The pageants are this afternoon at the Bass Lake Property Owner’s Association Building. Contestants must be there at 3 p.m. Doors open to the public at 4 p.m for the Little Miss and Little Mister Bass Lake Pageant and the Miss Bass Lake Pageant starts at 6 p.m.

Competitive Grant Awarded to Help Treat Offenders with Mental Disorders
A grant in the amount of $175,000 has been awarded locally to provide treatment to adult offenders diagnosed with a mental disorder.
Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall and Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper worked together with Porter-Starke Services to secure this competitive grant which requires no local match money. Only 12 grants were distributed.

If you hear music in the air, it could be coming from the Choralaires. The Starke County Choralaires are a chorus group that is a part of Melody Makers of Indiana. The Melody Makers of Indiana is the only chorus of it’s kind in the United States.

School Registration Beginning Soon at John Glenn Schools
In one month, students will be back in the classrooms.
The John Glenn School Corporation will open doors on Tuesday, Aug. 12 for students. The elementary schools will begin with instruction at 7:53 a.m. and dismiss school at 2:45 p.m. ET. Students in the middle school will start the school day at 7:55 a.m. and with a 2:50 p.m. dismissal and high school students will begin at 8 a.m. and dismiss at 3 p.m.

Inaugural WKVIdol Competition Entertains Starke County Fair Crowd
Last night’s inaugural WKVIdol competition at the Starke County Fair featured 11 quality performances from youngsters in three age groups. ReAnnen Cooper, 8, from Hamlet captured top honors in the ages 7 to 10 category. Victoria Horne, 13, of Hanna, won in the 11 to 14 age group. Hanna Clark, 16, of Koontz Lake took home the trophy in the 15 to 18 class. Knox Band Director Craige Phipps WKVI’s Nathan Welter and Mary Perren were the judges, and morning show host Tom Berg served as master of ceremonies. Region DJ’s provided the sound, and the trophies and participant medals came from Sports Unlimited in Knox.

An interim director is running Starke County EMS until the county commissioners can hire a full-time replacement for Paul Matthewson, who recently resigned from the job. The Starke County Commissioners this week unanimously ratified Keith Emigh’s appointment to that position. They’re accepting applications for the vacancy and hope to have a permanent EMS director hired by the end of September. Continue reading
