State Police Warn of Call Spoofing Scam
The Indiana State Police confirm the published telephone number for their general headquarters in downtown Indianapolis has been spoofed over the last few days. That’s the practice of masquerading as someone else by falsifying the number as it appears on the call recipient’s caller ID display. In this case, people across the country receiving the calls saw 317-232-8248 come up. Sometimes the caller reportedly spoke with a “thick Indian accent” and claimed to be from the Indiana State Police. Indiana State Police Post Adds K-9
The newest addition to the Indiana State Police Lowell post has four legs and a tail. Master Trooper Steve Caylor and his K-9 partner, Nikan, are graduates of the 2015 ISP K-9 Class. Caylor has been with the department for almost 20 years. Nikan is an 18 month old Malinherd, which is a cross between a Belgian Malinois and a German Shepherd. Continue reading

Authorities Crack Down on Drug Smuggling
A recent three-day saturation patrol on U.S. 31 by six police departments in north central Indiana resulted in 30 criminal arrests on 82 different drug-related charges. K9 Assists in Warrant Arrest in Medaryville
Three people were arrested on Monday after officers attempted to take Eric Wireman into custody on a warrant.
Officers received information that Eric Wireman, 31, was at 15385 W. 160 N. in Medaryville. He was wanted on a Starke County warrant for failure to appear. He did not appear in court on a felony charge of dealing in methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of visiting a common nuisance.
Wisconsin Man Fires Gun in Illinois Store, Captured in Indiana after Pursuit
A Wisconsin man was taken into custody in LaPorte County from an incident stemming in Illinois Friday night.
Vincent J. Toliver, 34, reportedly fired shots inside a Walgreen’s store in Broadview, Illinois. Indiana State Police troopers continued a pursuit of his vehicle on I-294 and I-80 into Indiana. Stop sticks were deployed several times across I-80 onto I-94, but Toliver was able to avoid hitting them. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department deputies attempted to deploy stop sticks, but Toliver was able to escape them as well. Troopers slowed eastbound traffic, and Toliver’s SUV slowed to a stop near the Michigan City exit. Toliver then began traveling slowly eastbound and turned around going west in the eastbound lanes on I-94 before coming to a stop.
Prosecuting Attorneys Support Amendment to Meth Bill
There is support for an amendment to a bill that would help prosecutors attack the epidemic of methamphetamine labs and the dangers that meth production impose on residents.
The amendment to Senate Bill 536 sponsored by Senator Brent Steele targets meth production by making ephedrine and pseudoephedrine schedule IV controlled substances. The pills would only be available by a doctor’s prescription.
North Judson Girl Injured in Starke County Accident
An eight-year-old North Judson girl was airlifted from the scene of a crash at the intersection of County Road 400 South and Range Road Tuesday afternoon.
According to an investigation by the Indiana State Police, Jana N. Sirb, 40, of North Judson was driving east on County Road 400 South when she lost control of her vehicle on the slushy roadway while attempting to stop at the intersection. Robert F. Hajek, 73, of North Judson was unable to avoid Sirb’s car when traveling south on Range Road.
Sirb complained of pain but refused medical treatment, according to the news release. Her daughter, Linora Sirb, 8, was airlifted from the scene to South Bend Memorial Hospital after suffering a severe leg injury. Continue reading

The Marshall County Safety Commission will work to keep drugs out of schools, and everyone can keep an eye out for possible drug activity.
Indiana State Police troopers said the number of meth labs has decreased in Marshall County, but the threat of meth getting into children’s hands is still possible. There are many more cases now involving the Department of Child Services because parents are abusing drugs, according to state police.
Indiana State Police Polygraph Unit Receives Acceditation
The Indiana State Police Polygraph Unit is now accredited. The unit was accredited by the Polygraph Law Enforcement Accreditation (PLEA).
A polygraph unit monitors and records readings of the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems when a person is asked a series of carefully designed questions while attached to the unit. The person taking the test is asked questions where they only answer yes or no. The examiner can determine if the person is giving a true statement by reviewing the readings.
One Dies in Marshall County Car Accident
A Bremen woman lost her life in a single vehicle accident in Marshall County.
The accident happened on U.S. 6 near Rose Road Friday evening. According to the Indiana State Police, the vehicle that Mary E. Durlin, 62, was driving struck a deer, left the roadway and hit a tree. The highway was closed so medical personnel could assist at the scene while police conducted a crash reconstruction and investigation.
