State Police Remind Drivers to Be Extremely Cautious

Many roads are clear, but a few isolated slick spots remain after blustery, intense winter weather graced the Kankakee Valley with large amounts of snowfall. The Indiana State Police advise all drivers to leave sooner and expect travel time to be twice as long as normal, to drive slower, and to increase the following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you by at least five times greater than normal. In addition, they urge drivers to approach intersections with great care as other drivers not paying attention will slide through red lights, and signal all lane changes and turning movements. If there are chips or cracks in your windshield, this is also a great time for an auto glass replacement to ensure that you have an unobstructed view of the road.

The wreck occurred just after 2 p.m. Eastern Monday afternoon on U.S. 30 at King Road in Marshall County. The force of the crash propelled those two rigs into two other stopped tractor-trailers. Jeffrey Wildermuth, 55, of Westville, sustained neck and back injuries. Additionally a tank of argon gas spilled from one of the trucks as it came to rest. According to the state police, the gas is inert and did not pose a hazard to the public. State Trooper Offers Winter Driving Tips
“Action is always faster than reaction. On a perfectly sunny day at 60 miles-per-hour the normal person doesn’t realize how far it takes to stop a car on a sunny day on dry pavement. A lot of times you see them following at even a closer distance when the weather’s bad. A lot of times they don’t realize the distance it takes, especially on a slick roadway, to stop,” Harsman said.

Firearm Deer Season Approaching; Drive Carefully

With firearm deer season mere days away, the spooked animals will soon be more active and may be more prominent near roads. Because of that, the Indiana State Police urge drivers to be cautious when traveling.
Motorists should take the following precautions when driving in rural areas to avoid having a crash involving a deer: when possible, use high beam headlights at night and be aware that deer could be standing on or near the side of the roadway; watch approaching vehicles and observe what may break their headlights beams, as it could be a passing deer; watch for reflections from the deer’s eyes; where there is one deer there are often several, so don’t assume you missed the deer because more could follow.
