Truck Driver Injured in Marshall County Multiple Semi Crash

A truck driver from Westville was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Plymouth for treatment of injuries sustained in a four tractor-trailer crash that shut down the westbound lanes of U.S. 30 Monday afternoon. The wreck occurred just after 2 p.m. Eastern Monday afternoon on U.S. 30 at King Road in Marshall County. Skender Emini, 36, of Ellyn, Illinois, fell asleep at the wheel, according to investigators with the Indiana State Police, and woke up just moments before rear-ending another semi that was stopped at the intersection. The force of the crash propelled those two rigs into two other stopped tractor-trailers. Jeffrey Wildermuth, 55, of Westville, sustained neck and back injuries. Additionally a tank of argon gas spilled from one of the trucks as it came to rest. According to the state police, the gas is inert and did not pose a hazard to the public. The highway was closed for nearly two hours as crews worked to clean up the wreckage.

Scammer Attempts to Defraud State Police Detective

This latest scam typically threatens to arrest the victim if they don’t pay the fines for some fabricated crime or debt and, to make matters worse, the crooks often have some personal information about the victim, which make them seem more legitimate.

State Trooper Offers Winter Driving Tips

Ice and snow, take it slow. Trooper Brian Harshman with the Indiana State Police says it’s important to adjust your driving for the weather conditions. This includes slowing down and leaving plenty of space between vehicles.

“Action is always faster than reaction. On a perfectly sunny day at 60 miles-per-hour the normal person doesn’t realize how far it takes to stop a car on a sunny day on dry pavement. A lot of times you see them following at even a closer distance when the weather’s bad. A lot of times they don’t realize the distance it takes, especially on a slick roadway, to stop,” Harsman said.

Firearm Deer Season Approaching; Drive Carefully

deer

With firearm deer season mere days away, the spooked animals will soon be more active and may be more prominent near roads. Because of that, the Indiana State Police urge drivers to be cautious when traveling.

Motorists should take the following precautions when driving in rural areas to avoid having a crash involving a deer: when possible, use high beam headlights at night and be aware that deer could be standing on or near the side of the roadway; watch approaching vehicles and observe what may break their headlights beams, as it could be a passing deer; watch for reflections from the deer’s eyes; where there is one deer there are often several, so don’t assume you missed the deer because more could follow.
