Be Safe This Halloween

  
 

Halloween is Thursday and safety is the number one priority.

Indiana State Police officials remind parents to make sure that costumes should be short to prevent trips and falls. Masks can obstruct a child’s vision so makeup may be a better solution. Children should wear light colors or put reflective tape on costumes.

Older children should trick-or-treat with friends and a route should be shared with parents. Only stop at familiar homes where outside lights are on. Children should not enter cars and homes of strangers. A flashlight should be carried when it’s dark.

Drug Take Back Event This Saturday

 
 

The Indiana State Police is partnering with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in a drug take back event.

You are encouraged to take your unwanted, expired and unused prescription medication to any Indiana State Police Post (except for the Toll Road Post in Bristol, IN) for proper disposal. There will be a designated receptacle for you to drop off your medication and no questions will be asked.

Additional Charges of Child Molestation Filed Against Knox Man

Additional charges been lodged against a Knox man after an investigation into a charge of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor.

Indiana State Police detectives received information in August that 36-year-old Keith Thatcher of Knox reportedly engaged in a sexual misconduct incident with a 15-year-old in Michigan City. The incidents reportedly occurred since July 2012. Continue reading

Bremen Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Semi Crash

 
 

A single-vehicle semi-truck crash in St. Joseph County claims the life of a Bremen man. Andrew Ginther, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck south of Wyatt, according to the Indiana State Police. He was southbound on State Road 331, drove his truck off the west side of the highway and hit a tree. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and the incident remains under investigation. Troopers do not believe weather was a factor in the wreck.

Indiana State Police Accepting Applications

 
 

The Indiana State Police officials are accepting applications for the 74th ISP Recruit Academy.

Duties include patrolling county, state and federal roads to detect and apprehend criminal and traffic law violators, investigate accidents, render first aid to victims until Emergency Medical Services arrive at the scene, criminal investigations, and a host of other requirements.

Indiana State Police Remind Motorists of School Bus Laws

 
 

The Indiana State Police recently made two announcements pertaining to school buses and the laws in place regarding stopped buses. Indiana law requires school bus drivers to stop at all railway crossings, whether those crossings are equipped with crossing arms or not, and visually inspect for oncoming trains. The Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Division has recently received reports from some school districts of their buses being struck in the rear by motorists failing to realize that they are required to stop at rail way crossings.

Indiana State Police Clarify Amber Alert Procedure

 
 
Although the most recent Amber Alert ended with the safe recovery of the child believed to be in danger, and the arrest of the mother, the Indiana State Police has reported that they continue to receive a number of questions regarding the process behind Amber Alert announcements. There are four requirements in order for an Amber Alert to be made, according to ISP headquarters.

LaPorte Man Charged With Murder in 1993 Cold Case

  
 

Authorities in LaPorte County have made an arrest in homicide that occurred more than 20 years ago. Jason L. Tibbs, 38, of LaPorte, was arrested this morning by officers from the Indiana State Police and LaPorte Police Department. He ‘s charged with murdering Rayna Rison, who was 16 at the time of her death. She was last seen alive on March 26,1993. Her father reported her missing when she didn’t come home from work at the Pine Lake Animal Hospital. “America’s Most Wanted” aired a story about her disappearance on April 2nd of that year, and her body was recovered on April 27, 1993 from a pond near Range Road in LaPorte County. An autopsy confirmed she was murdered.

 

Big Changes in Methamphetamine Laws Take Effect

 
 

The laws regarding sale of methamphetamine precursors and other changes to the criminal code involving methamphetamine are in effect.

Indiana State Police troopers want you to realize that the quantity of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine sales has changed. You may not purchase more than 3.6 grams of ephedrine or pseudoephedrine in one day, 7.2 grams of ephedrine or pseudoephedrine in a 30-day period or 61.2 grams or ephedrine or pseudoephedrine in a year.

Interstate 65 Reopened After Fatal Morning Crash

 
 

A Monon man was killed in a crash this morning that shut down both northbound lanes of I-65 near the Demotte-Roselawn exit just south of Lowell for several hours and sent two truck drivers to an area hospital. Jim A. Uildriks, 52, of Monon, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6 a.m. wreck by the Lake County Coroner as a result of blunt force trauma. His 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck was behind a tractor-trailer driven by Richard W. Konrad, 59, of Indianapolis, which had stopped because of construction up ahead, according to the Indiana State Police. A second semi, driven by Paul J. Gottsacker, 51, of Lavelle, Wis., was behind Uildriks’ truck and did not slow down or stop. It hit and ran over the pickup before hitting the trailer of Konrad’s semi. Both truck drivers complained of pain and were taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point.

State Police Hire More Staff to Process Thousands of Handgun License Applications

 
 
A surge in handgun license applications this year has caused the Indiana State Police to hire additional personnel to keep up with the amount of paperwork.

The state police have historically received around 5,200 applications per month, but since December 2012, the state police have received 91,940 applications for a license to carry a handgun. In January alone, more than 23,000 applications were submitted. While the number of requests have tapered off a little, state police received 6,500 new license requests in the month of June.

ISP Troopers to Patrol Roadways in Operation C.A.R.E.

 
 
Indiana State Police Troopers will be participating in Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort, or C.A.R.E., today through Sunday, July 7.

One hundred additional troopers will patrol area roadways in an attempt to reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries over the holiday weekend. Troopers will be targeting drivers who are impaired and motorists who speed, follow too closely, make unsafe lane changes, and drive aggressively. Those who fail to use seat belts and properly restrain children will also be targeted.

Make sure you are well rested if you plan to travel a long distance, avoid tailgating, obey all speed limits, utilize turn signals, avoid using your cell phone, wear your seat belt, and designate a sober driver if you plan on celebrating the holiday with an alcoholic beverage.

ISP Bremen Post Under New Commander

  
 
The Indiana State Police Bremen Post is under the charge of a new commander. Police Superintendent Douglas Carter recently announced the promotion of Sgt. Chad Larsh to the rank of lieutenant, putting him at the head of the Bremen Post covering Marshall, Kosciusko, St. Joseph, and Elkhart counties. Larsh earned this promotion through written testing and a competitive interview process.

Underage, Unpermitted Driver Sent to Hospital in Car Accident

 
 
A 15-year-old driver and his 45-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital Monday evening after their vehicle was rear-ended on State Road 331 near 4C Road in Bremen. According to a news release by the Indiana State Police, state police officers and rescue personnel were called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. for a personal injury accident.

Officials arrived on scene and found a 2000 Plymouth Neon had collided with the rear end of a 1967 Austin Mini Cooper. The purported driver of the northbound Mini Cooper, Theodore Hochstetler, 15 of Bremen, had slowed to make a left-hand turn into a private driveway when the Neon struck the rear of his vehicle.

State Police Caution Against Disaster Scammers

  
 

If you feel compelled to donate to the victims of the deadly Oklahoma tornadoes, make sure you know where your money is going. That advice comes from the Indiana State Police, who warn that scammers will inevitably try to take advantage of people’s generosity for personal gain. Citizens are cautioned to be skeptical of those going from door-to-door or making telephone calls to residents claiming to be be collecting funds for tornado relief.

ISP Offers Tips for Memorial Day Travelers

 
 

Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of the summer travel season and many Hoosiers are gearing up to take their family out for a pleasant summer vacation. However, there are some situations that can easily ruin a summer getaway, and the Indiana State Police are offering several tips to keep in mind when traveling.

First, avoid carrying large amounts of cash; carry only enough to pay for cabs, shuttle services, and other necessities. Credit and debit cards should not be left lying out where someone can see the number, and keep a copy of the credit card company’s number in a separate place so you can report the card stolen if it goes missing.
