Indiana Department of Transportation officials are keeping a close eye on the weather so they can respond appropriately to the wintry precipitation mix moving across the state.
Rain, freezing rain, snow and ice are all expected, and a few degrees variance in temperatures can make a big difference. INDOT maintenance supervisors will continue to monitor developing conditions and reports from law enforcement and the public as well as local forecasts so they can respond accordingly. The Knox City Council last night unanimously approved a name recommendation for 150 South. It’s the street that runs between Roosevelt Road and South Heaton Street past the Knox bus barn. The city recently used Community Crossings grant money from the state to connect the two ends. 
The Starke County Highway Department continues to make progress with bridge replacements and upgrades. The new bridge on 250 West over Bogus Run, just south of Toto Road, should be finished this week, according to county highway superintendent Rik Ritzler.

The Starke County Highway Department has parlayed available federal and state funds into significant road improvements. Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the county commissioners Monday the county was awarded more than $1 million in Federal Highway Administration construction funds to replace the bridge on 1200 East across the Yellow River. 
Paving work is underway on several downtown Knox streets thanks to a matching grant the city received from the Indiana Department of Transportation. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council Tuesday night several streets have already been paved with Community Crossings money. 
Motorists traveling between Medaryville and Francesville on U.S. 421 will need to find another route for the next few days. INDOT has shut down the highway between State Roads 14 and 114 for chip sealing. It’s scheduled to reopen Wednesday, weather permitting. 
The Hamlet Town Council voted last night to fund the paving of several streets with money in their economic development income tax fund. The Starke County Highway Department has agreed to do the work if the town will pay for the materials to pave 1.2 miles of roads.
