Highway Projects Force Oversize Loads to Travel Through Knox
More oversize loads are being routed through Knox as a result of road construction projects in LaPorte County. A superload is classified as a vehicle larger than 16 feet wide, 110 feet long, 15 feet tall or weighing more than 120,000 pounds, according to INDOT officials.

Marshall County Council on Aging to Complete Transportation Funding Paperwork
Marshall County will act as a funding pass-through point to deliver transportation funding from the Indiana Department of Transportation to the Marshall County Council on Aging.
Executive Director Jackie Wright explained to the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning that she is submitting grant paperwork to INDOT for the annual request for transportation funding. She requested that the County be the pass-through point for the funds. She anticipates the reception of $277,000 this year.
Work Continues on U.S. 35 Railroad Crossing in Knox
Work is expected to continue this week on the U.S. 35 railroad crossing in Knox.
According to city officials, INDOT and railroad crews are working to improve the crossing that became rather rough during the winter months. Officials hope that the crossing will open in the middle of the week.
Until the crossing opens, motorists are encouraged to use the INDOT recommended detour. Southbound U.S. 35 traffic will be detoured west on State Road 8, south on State Road 39, east on State Road 10, and back to U.S. 35. Northbound traffic will be detoured west on State Road 10, north on State Road 39, east on State Road 8, and back to U.S. 35. Local traffic can utilize local streets to avoid the closure.

The rough railroad crossing on U.S. 35 in Knox will soon be fixed. Starting Monday INDOT officials plan to close the highway between East John and East Bender Streets to fix the crossing. INDOT’s official marked detour takes motorists around the work using State Roads 8, 39 and 10 to get back to U.S. 35. Drivers of passenger cars can use city streets to bypass the closure. INDOT Prepares for Busy Travel Weekend
The combination of the Men’s Final Four in Indianapolis and spring break traffic will make for a busy weekend on Indiana’s highways. Of the four teams playing in the NCAA tournament, three are within a five-hour drive of Indiana. INDOT advises motorists should also expect additional traffic on interstates 65, 69, 74 and U.S. 31. Officials say contractors will pull back construction barrels and barricades as much as possible on highways to welcome basketball fans. Some road restrictions will remain in place for ongoing projects, though. They include I-65 north of Louisville for construction of a new Ohio River bridge and I-74 in Montgomery County between State Road 25 and U.S. 231. U.S. 31 is also down to one lane in each direction north of Indianapolis between State Roads 38 and 32 in Westfield. I-69 is reduced to one lane in each direction on weekdays as well for bridge rehabilitation at State Road 4 near Ashley. Continue reading
INDOT Begins Highway Signal Upgrades
The Indiana Department of Transportation is improving traffic signals at several intersections along U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 in Lake and Porter Counties. A total of 11 lights will be upgraded to feature flashing yellow arrows. They allow left-turning traffic to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and turn when a suitable gap is available. INDOT officials say this type of signal improves intersection efficiency by using cross-traffic gaps to allow more left turns. Continue reading

Multiple government agencies are partnering to give students scholarship opportunities.
The scholarships have been conducted in the past to help promote safe driving behind the wheel – especially when it comes to teens using their mobile devices. The “Drive Now. TXT L8R” campaign gives $5-thousand scholarships.
