Financial Aid Workshops to be Held Next Weekend for College Goal Sunday
Students planning to attend college next fall will be able to get some free help with some of the paperwork next weekend. As part of College Goal Sunday, financial aid professionals around the state will be hosting workshops on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It needs to be filed by April 15, in order for students to qualify for federal and state grants, scholarships, and student loans.

Indiana’s Secretary of Career Connections and Talent is touting the state’s workforce training initiatives. During a visit to Knox Wednesday, Secretary Blair Milo discussed the Workforce Ready Grant that’s part of the Next Level Jobs program. “For anybody that’s over the age of 18, you can go and get a hundred-percent-tuition-free career certificate at Ivy Tech or Vincennes or the other providers through Next Level Jobs,” she explained. “The only thing that would disqualify someone from being able to utilize that is if you have a degree already, so it’s not means-tested or anything else.”
Knox Schools, Ivy Tech Exploring Graduation Pathways Partnership
The Knox Community School Corporation is looking to partner with Ivy Tech Community College to help students meet the state’s new graduation requirements. During a recent school board meeting, Knox Schools Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart said that he and a couple other school officials met with representatives from Ivy Tech. He said Ivy Tech is willing to form a partnership with Knox Schools based on Indiana’s new Graduation Pathways. “They really want to get involved with Knox Community Schools,” Reichhart told board members. “They made that quite clear to us. And I believe that we want to get involved with them, as well.”

Electrical Maintenance Training Class Proves Successful for Pulaski County
Last Wednesday, seven employees graduated from an 18 week-long NIMS Electrical Maintenance Training Class. This was the first training class to be offered at this capacity in the nation and it was an incredible success for Pulaski County.
All seven employees had perfect attendance throughout the course. According to Pulaski County Economic Development officials, these individuals demonstrated dedication to their craft and a commitment to continuously work on advancing their skills. Each graduate was awarded a nationally recognized credential issued by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills. Employers stated that employees who went through the training are already displaying noticeable results on the job. Continue reading

More High School Graduates Prepared for College, According to Commission for Higher Education
More Indiana high school graduates are prepared for college, but the Indiana Commission for Higher Education says there’s still more work to be done. State officials say in spite of recent improvements, nearly a fifth of recent high school graduates are still not ready to take college courses that count toward their degrees. Ivy Tech’s Society of Innovators Launches Expedition Innovation 2015: “A Call for Nominations”
An effort is under way to find the “hidden innovators” of Northwest Indiana. The Ivy Tech Community College Society of Innovators recently announced its seven-county “Expedition Innovation 2015 – ‘A Call for Nominations.’ Between June 2nd and 17th officials with the society will visit each of the seven counties in the region to explain their goals in greater detail. They will be at Kemin Industries in rural North Judson on June 10th and at the Pulaski County CDC/Economic Development office in Winamac the following day.
NIPSCO Director of Economic Development Don Babcock serves on the Society of Innovators board. He says innovation is the foundation of our economy. He adds there are innovators out there who are below the radar that are making important contributions to our region, state and world. He says the Society of Innovators wants to find them.
