John Glenn Student Attends Twelve Years With Perfect Attendance

For 12 years, John Glenn student Rafael Castro has been getting up every school morning and making his way to school – every day. In fact, he has not missed a day of school since he began attending kindergarten at St. Patrick’s School in the fall of 1999, although he admits it was his mom’s goal first.

It wasn’t until he got to high school that he made it a goal of his own, when he determined that he could accomplish it. When asked if he came to school sick at any time he agreed he had, but never to the point of not feeling well enough to do his work or participate. He believes attendance is important and feels fortunate to have good health. Rafael is hopeful that future employers will take note of his attendance record, and that it will give him an edge in landing a job someday.

He will be recognized at a school-wide award ceremony today in front of the entire student body.

J.E.S.S.E. Co-op to Reorganize

The J.E.S.S.E. Co-op is reorganizing. Rochester schools recently pulled out of the special education cooperative that administers more than 80 different special classes and resource programs which leaves 9 school corporations in our area participating in the program.

With the withdrawal of Rochester, Knox Community School Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the majority of the financial services will now come out of Plymouth Schools.

John Glenn Spell Bowl Team Heads to State

What would you do if you were a school Superintendent and there was a high school coach who qualified for the state tournament 25 out of 25 years?

You’d probably recommend him or her for a raise. Well John Glenn’s High School Spell Bowl Team has qualified each year that Paul Hernandez has been coaching them. Of those years, they have been state champs in their class 15 times.

Local Marching Bands to Perform in Semi-State Competition

The Knox Redskin Brigade performs during Regional compeition at Chesterton

The Knox Redskin Brigade and the John Glenn Marching Band will be performing in the Semi-State Marching Band competition in Class C tomorrow at Decatur High School in Indianapolis.

John Glenn will perform at 5:20 p.m. ET and the Knox Redskin Brigade will perform at 5:46 p.m. ET. Awards for all of Class C, which contains 20 bands, will be at approximately 6:12 p.m. ET. 10 bands will advance to the State Finals which will be on Saturday, October 29th, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Regional Marching Band Competition to Feature Local Bands

The Knox Redskin Brigade will be performing in the Regional Marching Band competition tomorrow at Chesterton High School at 1:49 p.m. CT. Knox will be in competition with the John Glenn Falcon Pride band in Class C. John Glenn will play at 1:10 p.m. CT.

Plymouth will be performing tomorrow at Lafayette Jefferson High School at 6:35 p.m. ET. If the bands advance from the Regional competition, students will perform in the semi-state competition and then on to State competition at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
