The Medaryville Fire Department’s efforts to build a new fire station have gotten a boost from the Pulaski County Commissioners. The commissioners agreed Monday to let the department apply for a Community Development Block Grant, with the county serving as the pass-through agency.

The Pulaski County Council and Commissioners made appointments to some boards and commissions last week, but no one seemed to be entirely sure who’s currently on many of them. During last Monday’s joint session, the commissioners appointed Ray Franko to the advisory plan commission. He replaces Doug McKinley as one of the board’s Republican members. The commissioners had already appointed Democrat Bob Keller to replace Jim Thompson back in December.

Cass-Pulaski Community Corrections needs some Pulaski County residents to serve on its advisory board. Pulaski Circuit Court Judge Michael Shurn told the county commissioners last week there are several openings to be filled, in order to reach equal representation from both counties.
Knox City Council members considered a grant administrator agreement with Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission on Tuesday night. KIRPC representative Shawn Cain told the council that the agreement would be to assist the city with the OCRA grant they recently received for the Knox Parks 5-Year Master Plan.
Cain said the agreement would allow KIRPC reps to assist the clerk-treasurer with reports and claims and they’d also be available to answer any questions that the council members may have in the future. Cain added that there is a $2,000 charge for their services. Continue reading
The North Judson Town Council members will make an appointment to the Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission and discuss the Starke County Economic Development Foundation appointment when they meet tonight.
Department heads will deliver updates to the council members and there will be some time allotted for public presentations and recognition of guests.
The meeting will take place in North Judson Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
North Judson Town Council members appointed Councilman James Young as the council representative of the Starke County Economic Development Board, at their meeting Tuesday night.
Town Council president Wendy Hoppe also asked if any members were willing to volunteer as the representative for KIRPC or the Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission. Councilwoman Jane Ellen Felchuck added that they could nominate a citizen, if no members are interested in filling the position. Since Councilman John Rowe wasn’t present during last night’s meeting, they decided to table that appointment until their meeting on January 2nd. Continue reading
The potential of a supplemental round of grant funding being offered through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs could provide more financial assistance for proposed projects in the Town of North Judson. Vince Sommers of Common Wealth Engineers came before the North Judson Town Council members to fill them in on the process so far and to alert them of the potential supplemental round of grant funding.
The town is pursuing SRF Drinking Water Funds for their water system improvement project. Sommers said that any time federal money is utilized an environmental impact report must be conducted. The State Revolving Fund reviewed the preliminary engineering report for the water system improvements and instructed the organization who helped secure the grant, Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission (KIRPC), to advertise a finding of no significant impact. Pulaski County Human Services apparently will be getting its new van. The Pulaski County Council approved the local share of the funding Monday. It took them six months to do it.
Pulaski County Human Services apparently will not be able to buy a new van, after all. The county council failed to finalize the local share of the funding Monday. They had been considering the issue since April.
North Judson officials hope to nail down some plans for water and wastewater upgrades this morning. The town plans to upgrade its combined sewer overflow system to bring it into compliance with Indiana Department of Environmental Management regulations. Upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant and water facilities are also planned.
It’s looking unlikely that North Judson will be able to get grant funding to help demolish a downtown building believed to be in danger of collapse. Part of the structure at 205 and 207 Lane Street already collapsed in on itself on May 11, forcing North Judson to close off a portion of its downtown area.
The Winamac Park Board is now eligible to apply for grant funding from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. DNR officials notified the town of its eligibility last month, following the completion of a five-year parks and recreation plan. Continue reading
Pulaski County will soon have a county-wide transportation plan. The Indiana Department of Transportation is now requiring rural planning organizations around the state to put together plans for each county they serve. In Pulaski County, that responsibility falls to the Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission. Continue reading
The Starke County Park Board is moving ahead with the process of finding a consultant to create a five-year plan for the county’s park facilities. A comprehensive plan is required before the county may receive grant funding from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Continue reading
