Starke County Veteran’s Memorial project organizers are reporting a successful first month of fundraising. Committee member Kathy Norem told the Starke County Park Board Tuesday that more than $120,000 has been received or pledged since fundraising began February 1.

Several preliminary steps for the new Starke County Veteran’s Memorial were approved by the county park board Tuesday. The memorial will be placed on the southeast corner of the courthouse square. It will include the names of those killed in action in wars and conflicts dating back to the Civil War, etched in a black granite stone.

A Stellar Community designation could be a way to bring improvements to the Bass Lake Beach. That was the suggestion given to the Starke County Park Board last week.
Funeral services for a former Starke County Sheriff will be held tomorrow afternoon.
Wilkus Minix passed away Wednesday, July 5 at the Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac. He was the Starke County Sheriff from 1995 to 1998, and he was also an officer for the North Judson Police Department and the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.
He was a member of the Starke County VFW and the Knox American Legion. He also served as a California Township Advisory Board member and was a former precinct committeeman for the Republican Party.
Funeral services will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT at the Braman and Son Memorial Chapel in Knox with visitation today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. He will be interred in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Knox.
Members of the Knox VFW and the American Legion laid wreaths at the War Memorial at the Starke County Courthouse. Organizer, Terry Turner, says this is a part of the national Wreaths Across America program.
