Red Cross to Serve Meals in Starke, Pulaski Counties Saturday and Sunday

Red Cross volunteers will be serving meals in Starke and Pulaski counties Saturday and Sunday. Lunch will be available at the Monterey Fire Station from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST. Dinner will be served there from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Meals will also be served at the Winamac Fire Station from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. EST for lunch and 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. for dinner.

Knox City Council Votes to Increase Volunteer Fire Department Pay

 

During the Knox City Council meeting last night, members considered a change to the Fire Protection Agreement between the City and the Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department.

As things were, volunteer firefighters would receive $10 per call, regardless of the time spent at a location. Mayor Dennis Estok said that whether they’re there for five minutes or five hours and they would still only receive $10. After attending a meeting recently Mayor Estok saw a need for an adjustment. Knox Doesn’t Qualify for Grant for Fire Station Expansion

The City of Knox did not qualify for a grant to make improvements to the south side fire station based on results of a recently completed income survey. Firefighters and city officials went door-to-door for several weeks to gather data from residents. Knox House Fire Under Investigation

 
 

The cause of a Thursday night house fire in Knox is under investigation. The Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to a home in the area of 200 South and 200 East just before 8 p.m. and returned to the station after 11 p.m. The Bass Lake Volunteer Fire Department assisted.

Passengers Injured in Crash at SR 8 and U.S. 35

At least two people were injured in a late morning crash on State Road 8 at U.S. 35. The driver of a red Chevrolet Cavailer was eastbound on 8 and ran the stop sign, according to witnesses and officials from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department. A northbound Chrysler minivan was unable to avoid hitting the car, which came to rest on the northeast corner of the intersection. Firefighters from the Knox-Center Township Fire Department had to cut the female passenger from the wreckage. She complained of neck and back pain but was alert and conscious. She was taken to IU Health Starke Hospital for treatment. Neither driver was injured, but two passengers in the van were hurt.

Four Departments Respond to House Fire

Firefighters from four local departments responded to a house fire on 175 North just east of U.S. 35 Sunday afternoon. Dispatchers were notified of the fire at 2:15 p.m. The Knox, Hamlet, Koontz Lake and Washington Township departments spent three hours getting the blaze under control. No injuries were reported. As soon as we have more information, we’ll update the story on the air and on WKVI.com.

 

 

Sunday Morning Fire Destroys Vacant Historic Home

 
 

A fire early Sunday morning destroyed a historic structure on the north side of Knox. “Mackey’s Boarding House” was located at the northeast corner of Mound and Prettyman Streets. The once-stately Victorian structure had been vacant for several years. Firefighters were called out at 3:30 a.m. and remained on the scene for several hours. Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost tells WKVI news the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Firefighters Return to Scene of Friday Morning Blaze

 
 

The Knox-Center Township Fire Department was called back to the scene of a fire they spent six hours battling early Friday morning. The vacant home in the 1300 South block of 300 East, just south of Binkley Drive apparently rekindled just after 5 last night. Firefighters were on the scene for about 90 minutes. The cause of Friday morning’s fire is still under investigation.

Knox Fire Department Responds to Early Morning House Fire

 
 

The Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to a home on County Road 300 East near Binkley Drive early this morning for a house fire. Dispatchers with the Starke County Sheriff’s Office advise that call came in just before 1 this morning. Firefighters were still on the scene as of 4 a.m. No injuries were reported.
