A sobriety checkpoint held at Talmer and Schricker avenues in North Judson Friday night didn’t lead to any arrests, but it did end badly for one Knox police officer when he struck a deer and totaled his squad car. Knox Mayor Rick Chambers told the city council at their meeting this week that the accident totaled the 1997 Crown Victoria squad car, which he said had around 100,000 miles on it at the time of the accident.

Knox Board of Works Approves Officers Request to Purchase Duty Weapons
The Knox City Board of Works approved a request by the Knox City Police Department for two officers to purchase two duty weapons for their own use at a cost of $375 apiece.
The Knox City Council previously approved a request from Police Chief Clint Norem to allow the officers to buy their own service pistols in order for new guns to circulate into use by the department.
These are the last two guns to be purchased in this cycle. The Board of Works approved the request with a reminder that the officers re-register them in their own name.
Knox Man Arrested After Short Pursuit
A Knox man was arrested Sunday after a brief pursuit with an officer from the Knox City Police Department.
The officer saw a vehicle travel at a high rate of speed on Main Street near the John Street intersection. As the driver approached the Culver Road intersection, the officer saw that he had picked up speed. The officer turned on his red and blue lights to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop.
Knox Police Dept. Continues to Accept Unwanted Prescriptions
Knox City Police Chief Clint Norem has logged the first prescription medications that have been deposited into the police department’s prescription drug drop-off box.
Norem has logged 24 bottles of unwanted and unused prescription medication. They need to be logged just like any other drugs taken in during a regular investigation and then they will be moved from the facility and destroyed at a later time.
The drop-off box is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is monitored by a security camera. You may drop-off any unwanted or unused prescription medication in the front lobby of the Knox City Police Department. Any abuse of the service will not be tolerated.
Head Start students treated and released following crash
The 15 Marshall-Starke Head Start students whose bus got hit by a truck this morning on the way to school have been released to their

Knox City Police Department Drop-off Site for Unwanted Prescription Drugs
You can now dispose of your unwanted prescription medication at the Knox City Police Department.
Officers have installed a drop-off container in the lobby at the police department. If you have any unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, you can safely dispose of those in this bin. A security camera will be monitoring deposits and police will properly destroy the medications.
The drop-off bin is an attempt to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft by removing unused and unwanted prescription medication from homes.
The Knox City Police Department is located at 120 N. Shield Street.
Knox Police Arrest Alleged Burglary Suspect
A Wabash man was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 29 after he was allegedly seen stealing scrap from a home in Knox.
A neighbor called police to report a burglary in progress at 0208 S. 500 E. and reported seeing the suspect messing with the gutters at the residence before seeing the suspect try to force the garage door open. He reportedly saw him enter the south garage door and then put some items into his truck before leaving the scene. The witness was able to give a description of the vehicle to police.
Knox Man Sentenced for Theft, Auto Theft
A Knox man received his sentence in the Starke Circuit Court this week after he pleaded guilty to charges of Auto Theft as a Class D felony and Theft as a Class D felony following his arrest on March 8, 2012.
Zachary Tomerlin, 19, faced two cases in the Starke Circuit Court; the charges of Theft stemmed from an incident in March when police received a report of subjects stealing scrap metal from a barn in Starke County. An investigation into the matter led police to arrest Tomerlin and Daniel Bradley, 21, for the theft.
Knox Man Arrested Amidst Sexual Battery Allegations
A Knox man was arrested last weekend on allegations of sexual battery.
A woman called police to report that she had been attacked by Ryan Povilaitis. She told Knox City Police that Povilaitis was intoxicated and came into the room in the residence they shared and he allegedly forced himself on her. The performance of the sexual act was not committed, but it was attempted. The oral form of the act reportedly occurred. He also allegedly poked the victim with toothpicks and hit her with other objects.
Knox Man Charged After Alleged Burglary
A Knox man has been arrested on Burglary and Theft charges after an investigation by the Knox City Police Department.
Kyle Bobb, 18, is being held in Starke County Jail on suspicion that he broke into a residence of a deceased woman and stole items from the home.
Knox Woman Arrested on Drug Charges
A Knox woman was arrested Wednesday after police executed an arrest warrant and search warrant at her home.
Officers went to Sherry Wireman’s home on 150 South in Knox to execute an arrest warrant and while they were serving the warrant, officers reportedly saw drug paraphernalia in the residence.
Kankakee Valley F.O.P. Gives Awards for Officer, Dispatcher of the Year
The members of the Kankakee Valley Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #129 handed out two awards last week – the first two of its kind in the lodge’s history.
The members named Knox City Police Officer Chad Dulin as Officer of the Year. He was given this distinction for his heroic act after a scary accident on Feb. 11, 2012.
Knox Police Department Kept Busy in 2012
The Knox City Police Department had a busy year last year.
In his annual report, Police Chief Clint Norem stated that 4,207 calls were made to the department in 2012 with 116 accident reports taken and 384 incident reports written.
Knox Man Arrested Following Apartment Burglary
A Knox man was arrested following the execution of a search warrant in the wake of a burglary at the Ruthie Drive apartments.
Alysia and Kevin Bowman left their apartment around 11 a.m. on Christmas Eve to spend time with family, and later that night, Alysia received a message from a friend who informed her that her apartment door had been kicked open. Her neighbor confirmed the door had been kicked in, and the pair rushed home to see what had taken place.
Knox Man Arrested Following Battery Incident
A Knox man was arrested Wednesday after an alleged domestic battery incident.
Police were called to a home in Giles Court after a call came in about a woman who had been battered by her husband. The victim told police that her husband, Bernard Breese, told her about an infidelity and she got upset. She told police that an argument ensued and he tried to hug her but she reportedly told him to not touch her. She said Breese allegedly picked her up and threw her down on the ground. Her head hit the ground which caused an eye and forehead injury. The victim then ran across the street to call the authorities.
Knox Man Arrested For Possession of Controlled Substances
A Knox man was arrested Monday after he was reportedly in possession of narcotics.
An officer with the Knox City Police Department was called to the SuperValue Inn after a call came in about a battery. The alleged victim, who later told police that a battery did not occur, told police that the suspect, Eric Wireman, had ran from the scene toward Smith Farm Store.
Knox Man Arrested after Police Find Suspected Heroin in His Possession
A 19-year-old Knox man was arrested Saturday after police found approximately 12 grams of suspected heroin in his possession.
An officer from the Knox City Police Department pulled over a vehicle driven by Matthew Norem in the area of Lake Street and Main Street as the vehicle’s exhaust was too loud and the registration returned expired.
Knox Woman Arrested after Police Find Mobile Meth Lab
A Knox woman was arrested Sunday after Knox police found her with an alleged active methamphetamine lab in her vehicle.
A Knox City Police officer saw a vehicle traveling northbound on 500 East from State Road 8 and it went off the road. Shortly before approaching the intersection with Corey Drive, the vehicle’s turn signal activated and turned onto the road. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.
North Judson Man Arrested For Alleged Battery
Formal charges are pending against a North Judson man who allegedly was involved in a domestic battery issue Sunday.
North Judson police responded to a call of a domestic dispute in the 300 block of Franklin Avenue. A woman called police to say she was battered by her husband, Jeffrey Jacobs, in front of a child. She called 911 to report the incident but he took the phone from her and hid.
After an initial investigation by North Judson Police and with the assistance from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the Knox City Police Department, Jacobs was located and taken into custody. He was arrested on preliminary charges of Domestic Battery, Resisting Law Enforcement and Interfering with the Reporting of a Crime. He was booked in the Starke County Jail.
