Former Knox City Police Officer Passed Away

A former Knox City Police officer passed away Sunday.

Fred Hignite, 66, was a 22-year veteran of the Knox City Police Department. He also worked as a patrolman for the North Judson Police Department and the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He recently retired from the Knox City Police Department.

Funeral services will be this Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. Visitation is Friday from 4–8 p.m. at the funeral home. Special honors will be conducted by the Knox City Police Department.

No Injuries in Wednesday Afternoon Accident

A two vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Culver Road and Main Street in Knox yesterday afternoon.  While no specific information has been given about the accident, it is known that one of the vehicles involved ran the stop light at the intersection.  No injuries were reported.  Continue reading →

Hamlet Man Killed in Monday Accident in Knox

Knox City Police and first responders tend to an accident at U.S. 35 and John Street in Knox

Starke County Coroner Kris Rannells has released the name of the man killed in a two vehicle accident in Knox Monday afternoon.

67-year-old Robert Freye, of Hamlet, was traveling north on U.S. 35 in Knox when he suffered a heart attack, causing him to cross over into the southbound lane by John Street and hit a minivan driven by Patrick McCarty, 39, of Knox. Freye died instantly of a torn aorta as a result of the accident. The passenger in his vehicle, Mary Hightower, 63, of Hamlet was injured in the accident and was flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. McCarty received minor injuries in the accident.

Knox Woman Arrested For Stealing From Parked Cars

A Knox woman was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft after an investigation by the Plymouth Police Department.

On Tuesday, June 26, an employee from AutoPark called the Plymouth Police Department to report a customer going through employee cars in the parking lot. Police were told that a video was taken of the suspect entering one car and placing something in her pocket.

Authorities Not Ready to Release Identity of Driver in Fatal Accident

Authorities are not yet ready to release the name of the driver of a vehicle who died in a Monday morning accident on U.S. 35 and John Street in Knox. Notification of the next of kin has to be made before that information can be released.

Starke County Coroner Kris Rannells and Forensic Pathologist Dr. Alan Griggs performed an autopsy Tuesday on the victim in Lafayette and confirmed that the driver of the passenger vehicle had a heart attack prior to the accident and died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. The driver suffered a torn aorta.

Injuries Reported in Two Vehicle Accident in Knox

Knox City Police and first responders tend to an accident at U.S. 35 and John Street in Knox

Knox City Police officers and emergency responders were called to a two vehicle accident on U.S. 35 and John Street this morning that resulted in a fatality.

A preliminary investigation shows the driver of a passenger vehicle was traveling northbound on U.S. 35 and crossed the center line, striking a southbound mini-van. Critical injuries were sustained by the occupants in both vehicles, but the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. An Indiana State Police reconstructionist has been called to the scene to help in the investigation.

Knox Man Arrested On Intimidation Charges

A Knox man was arrested Monday on an active arrest warrant for Intimidation.

On June 1st, it is alleged that 32-year-old Jason Danekas was attempting to move out of his brother’s home when an argument escalated. Danekas reportedly picked up a large knife and threatened the life of his brother. Their mother stepped in and tried to stop Danekas from doing harm and he allegedly threatened her as well. He then threatened to take his own life.

Vehicle Fires Deemed Arson By State Fire Marshall

The Knox City Police Department and the Knox-Center Township Fire Department were called to a vehicle fire at Carl Manns’ residence at 503 S. Heaton Street late Tuesday night.

When officials arrived on scene, they found two vehicles on fire. After the fires were extinguished, the State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and an investigator helped process the evidence. The evidence led the investigator and Knox police officers to the conclusion that the fires were acts of arson.

Last week, Knox City Police officers and members of the fire department were called to a suspicious fire outside of a vacant home next to the residence of Carl Manns. A small amount of siding and a shutter were damaged in that incident, but luckily, the neighbors who called in the incident had the fire out before officials arrived on scene.

Detectives are asking that if you have any information about either incident, call the Knox City Police Department at 772-4122.

Knox Police and Fire Departments Called to Small House Fire

The Knox City Police Department and the Knox-Center Township Fire Department were called to a fire at 11:00 p.m. last night at a home across from Advanced Auto Parts on U.S. 35.

The neighbors saw the fire on the side of the vacant home and called the Sheriff’s Department. They reportedly had the fire out by the time officials arrived on scene. The fire caused a minimal amount of damage.

Starke County Traffic Safety Partnership to Participate in Click it or Ticket Campaign

Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and Knox and North Judson Police Departments will be participating in the “Click it or Ticket” campaign beginning May 18th through June 3rd.

This blitz, coordinated by the Indiana Governor’s Council on Impaired or Dangerous Driving, allows officers to patrol during this seat belt enforcement period. All drivers and passengers are encouraged to wear their seat belts at all times in a motor vehicle. If you don’t wear your seat belt, you will receive a traffic citation. No warnings will be given.

The Knox City Police Department has moved to its new office in a building purchased from Dean Wells last year, located across from City Hall.

Knox City Police Arrest Man for Alleged Theft, Another Involved Hit by Vehicle

A Valparaiso man was arrested after a theft incident at Sabre Manufacturing in Knox on April 9th.

Knox City Police responded to Sabre Manufacturing after a call came in about a suspicious vehicle. When police arrived on scene, two forklifts were parked next to the vehicle. According to police, the vehicle’s back glass window was open and wire was hanging out of the back. The employees said they blocked the vehicle in so it couldn’t leave. The employees reportedly told police that they saw a man, later identified as Michael Bundy, Jr., and Bundy reportedly said to the employees that he was intoxicated and he did something bad. He then left he area on State Road 8. After an investigation, it was learned that the wire in the vehicle was stolen from the factory. The vehicle that had the wire in it returned to a relative of Bundy Jr.’s. The employees said that Casan Bogan, Bundy, Jr.’s cousin and a janitor at Sabre, was also seen in the area where the wire was taken. Both had reportedly been drinking earlier in the evening.

Knox Man Arrested Following Burglary

Knox City Police officers were called to a residence in Knox early Saturday morning in response to a burglary in progress. While en route to the address on south Main Street, officers learned that a male had fled from the residence on foot after allegedly stealing a purse and medication belonging to the homeowner.

Officers learned of a possible suspect, and on Saturday morning, a search warrant was executed at the Woods Apartments on East Danker Street in Knox, where they found the items that had been stolen from the Main Street residence. Eric Draper, 34, of Knox was taken into custody.

Bond Set in Knox Swim Coach Arrest

Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall set a $15,000 bond for Knox Community School swim coach Robert R. Corbin, who is charged with two counts of Attempted Child Seduction as Class D felonies. Corbin, 27, is also prohibited from making any contact with the victim.

In the affidavit in support of probable cause filed today in circuit court by Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff and prepared by Knox City Police Department Detective David Combs, it is alleged that on Wednesday, March 28, Knox Police Department Officer Chad Keen responded to a call and went to a residence in Knox. He was informed by the victim’s father that his sixteen-year-old daughter had been receiving inappropriate messages from a Knox teacher, and Officer Keen took printed pages of Facebook messages between his daughter and Corbin.

Two Arrested after Search Warrant

Two Knox residents were arrested on drug charges on Wednesday.

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department received information regarding a possible methamphetamine operation at 2135 S. Rhea Street in Knox. After an investigation, detectives applied for a search warrant for the residence, which was granted. Starke County and Knox City police officers executed the search warrant and reportedly found an active one-pot method methamphetamine lab, precursors used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, the finished product, and drug paraphernalia.

Plymouth Police Department Busy with Theft Investigations

The Plymouth Police Department has investigated several theft cases recently from Walmart. There is usually one or two arrests a week about that involve shoplifters in the chain store.

Plymouth police officers received a call Monday night concerning a shoplifter from a different location – Martin’s Supermarket in Plymouth. Sean McNab, 19, of Plymouth, was arrested on a preliminary charge of Theft. He was taken to the Marshall County Jail.

Plymouth Man Arrested after Knox Police Find Meth Lab

A Plymouth man was arrested after Knox City Police conducted a search warrant at the Super Value Inn in Knox.

Officers obtained information yesterday morning that 41-year-old Johnny Whitt, Jr. was purchasing items used to make methamphetamine at a local store. Later that morning, officers conducted a traffic stop where Whitt was found to be in possession of items used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. They learned that Whitt had been staying at the Super Value Inn and requested a search warrant at that location which was granted.
