As prom season approaches, local high schools are once again warning students of the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. The Oregon-Davis SADD chapter is holding its annual mock crash today for high school juniors and seniors. Fire trucks, rescue vehicles, and a helicopter are all expected to be on the Oregon-Davis campus, as part of the presentation.
Those looking for work will have the chance to meet with several local employers tomorrow in Knox. WorkOne Northwest Indiana and the Starke County Economic Development Foundation are teaming up to host a job fair at the Knox High School Gym.
The Knox School Board has approved the list of contractors working on the school corporation’s facility improvement project. During Tuesday’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart presented a list of projects totaling about $4.5 million.
The Knox High School Class of 2019 will get to graduate a week sooner. The school board last week voted to move next year’s commencement ceremony from June 6 to May 31.
Local school administrators are keeping an eye on proposed changes to school accountability standards.
The Knox Community School Corporation may launch its own alternative high school this fall. On Tuesday, the school board agreed to let administrators continue working on plans for a “Redskin Academy.”
The three building principals told the Knox Community School Board this week that with the recent school closures, students are working well with the alternative instruction day.
Elementary School Principal Glenn Barnes said eLearning is a positive experience for his students when school is closed due to inclement weather.
The Knox School Board has finalized arrangements for next month’s summer school classes. On Monday, board members approved a list of 19 summer school teachers and aides. However, Interim Superintendent Jim Dermody explained that each middle and high school class will only be offered if at least 15 students sign up, due to Indiana Department of Education funding guidelines. Knox High School’s graduating seniors took one last walk through their old elementary school before they graduate. Wearing their caps and gowns, the seniors walked in procession through the elementary school Friday morning, as “Pomp and Circumstance” played over the school’s intercom. Good news! The decision, last night, to refinance the Knox school system’s pension bond will save an estimated $185,000 for taxpayers over the life of the bond, according to Superintendent A.J. Gappa. Continue reading
