Bella Vita Representatives Give Presentation to Knox Community School Board

The Knox Community School Board heard a presentation about the new Bella Vita pregnancy resource center that will be opening on U.S. 35 in Knox in March.

“David Bullock, one of our former teachers who retired a few years back, has been involved with the non-profit organization called Bella Vita,” explained Superintendent A.J. Gappa. “Mr. Bullock and Susanne Lange, also of Bella Vita, were at the Board meeting just to give an informational presentation to the Board and would like to establish a positive relationship between the schools in Starke County and Bella Vita.”

Knox Community School Board Approves Retirement of Middle School Principal Steve Cronk

The Knox Community School Board approved the retirement of Middle School Principal, Steve Cronk, at its meeting Monday night.

“Mr. Cronk, who has worked in a number of school corporations throughout Indiana, but who has been at the Knox Middle School as Principal for the last number of years, decided it’s finally time to sit back and enjoy life a little bit,” said Superintendent A.J. Gappa. “He has submitted a letter of retirement that will take effect on June 30th. The Board regrettably accepted that resignation. It’s kind of a bittersweet personnel report when you accept the retirement of a person who has meant a lot to a lot of the kids at the Middle School here.”

Knox Students to Make up Two Snow Days

The Knox Community School Superintendent announced that the students will be making up two snow days so far this year.

“Unfortunately the weatherman did not cooperate in December of this year so we had to call off school twice,” explained Superintendent A.J. Gappa. “In our calendar for the year, we have three contingency days and the first two will have to be made up. The first one will be on President’s Day, which is Monday, February 21st, and the second contingency day would be on Friday, April 29th. We still have one day built in and hopefully we won’t have to use it.”

Knox High School to Participate in Homecoming Activities this Week

Knox High School students and staff will be participating in Homecoming activities this week. Students will be dressing in ugly sweaters today, Tuesday is Nerd Day, Wednesday is ‘80s Throw Back Day, Thursday is Red and White Day and Friday is Class Color Day with a school pep rally. During the pep rally, students will be voting on their favorite shopping cart float. The floats will also be displayed at the boys basketball game. The Knox Redskins will be playing the LaVille Lancers at 7:00 p.m. CT in Weinberg gymnasium.

Knox Community School Board members Gary Dulin, Mary Lynn Ritchie and Mike Yankauskas were sworn into office by Knox City Court Judge Charlie Hasnerl on Monday night. The three candidates were reelected into office in the November 2010 General Election.

During the Spotlight on Success portion School Board meeting, the Board commended 5th grade students, Haley Wilkinson and Cheyenne Arrendondo. They submitted Christmas ornaments and a story about their ornaments to Indiana’s First Lady, Cheri Daniels, and their submissions were selected to be hung on the Statehouse Christmas tree. The Knox Community School Board approved upcoming network and telecommunications projects at its meeting Monday night. The School Board and Technology Director, Jim Landrum, are hoping to secure federal funding for the projects approved.

Knox Community School Board Reorganizes

The Knox Community School Board reorganized at its meeting Monday night. The new President of the Board is Harold Welter who succeeds Gary Dulin. Mary Lynn Ritchie was retained as Vice President and Jerry Fletcher was retained as Secretary.

The Board also retained Sherry Fort as Corporation Treasurer, Linda Binkowski as Deputy Treasurer, Mark Jensen as Transportation Director/Head Mechanic, Kit Ream as Food Services Director, William F. Satterlee III as Corporation Attorney, Kirk Bennett as the Board’s Legislative Liaison, Alan Selge as the Starke County Historical Society representative and Ruth Bailey as the Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority representative.

Before he passed away in 1995, beloved Knox Middle School Principal Chuck James bequeathed some of his prized possessions to those who he thought would enjoy them. One of the possessions was an MIA bracelet he had worn after the downing of Andy Howes’ helicopter in Vietnam. The bracelet has been in the Board Room at the Knox Elementary School in a display case.

Knox Community School Board Moves Ahead with High School Project

The Knox Community School Board approved two agenda items that involve the Qualified School Construction Bond project at the high school. The project includes rehabilitating the roof, lighting, ceiling and HVAC unit in the pool area and water piping throughout the building.

Knox Middle and High School Bands Present Holiday Concerts

Knox Middle School and High School bands presented their holiday concert on Wednesday, December 8th.  The bleachers were filled with parents, friends, and loved ones as the 6th, 7th and 8th graders students, along with the the Knox Tomahawk Jazz Band and the High School bands, played Christmas favorites.  Mr. Craige Phipps and Mr. David Elliott directed the bands.  The Band Boosters held a raffle for several items including a Wii game console.  Santa Claus stopped at Weinberg Gymnasium to visit with children at the end of the concert.

The Knox School Board heard the Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, and the Public Law 221 results at its meeting Monday night. Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Peggy Shidaker, and the three building principals, Glenn Barnes, Steve Cronk and Dr. Elizabeth Ratliff, explained the results to the Board.

Knox Elementary Programs Scheduled this Week

Hundreds of proud parents and grandparents are attending the school Christmas programs in our area. In Knox, elementary students from the grades have their special night to perform before an appreciative audience. The elementary music directors are Gary Kuechenberg and Lisa Guzman. Providing art work for the programs are students under the direction of Art Director, Derek Eveland.

Food Donations Needed for Kiwanis/Knox Schools Food Drive

The Knox Kiwanis Club and the Knox School Corporation are teaming up to help families in need this holiday season.

The two organizations are collecting food and/or cash donations to help Knox families. The requests for food baskets are greater than the donations. If you have food that you can donate to these organizations, you may drop it off at the Knox High School Office today or Thursday, or call 772-1670. The students and Kiwanis members will be assembling the food baskets on Thursday and delivering them to families on Friday.

Kids Love Cookies and Milk and Bedtime Stories

Knox Community Elementary School students gobbled up the evening at the “Cookies & Milk & Bedtime Stories” event. As students came in they got books, and entered into a drawing for a turkey. They got to sit with their parents and get read to. Then ten lucky kids got to come down and claim a turkey. The evening’s festivities concluded in the cafeteria, where they got cookies and milk while visiting with their friends.
