The Knox Community School Board received an update on the first week of school when they met this week.
Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the principals gave building reports and said it was a smooth opening week of school.
“Other than some minor bus on the first day getting the elementary students on board and then getting to the middle school, which is now the last school dismissed this year and is a change from last year, everything else has gone very smoothly,” said Gappa.
School board members in the area have been implementing a new policy that pertains to firearms on school property.

The Knox School Board members have a healthy agenda tonight after having to cancel their prior meeting.
The board will have several hires and resignations to discuss as well as reductions in force.
The elementary assistant principal salary will be under discussion. Rebecca Despot has moved from the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation to the Knox Community School Corporation in that administrative position.
Starke County high school students wishing to pursue a career in either welding or automotive technology can get a head start on doing so without leaving home. The Starke County Initiative for Lifelong Learning offers courses in both fields of study to high school juniors and seniors. Continue reading
The academic year is off to a good start at Starke County’s newest school. Classes started last Friday at The Crossing. It’s a faith-based alternative school that offers a mix of classroom and vocational training to youngsters who have been expelled, dropped out of school or have otherwise fallen through the educational cracks. Summer is almost over for students attending area schools.
Knox Community School Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the staff is nearly ready for the start of school.
“Everybody is trying to get everything ready,” said Gappa. “The building administrators are getting things going. We have some professional development days this week for all of the staff members. New teachers are coming in Friday and all staff members will report on Monday, Aug. 11. We also have back to school night from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in each of the buildings. Parents can come in and meet the teachers and see what the classrooms are like and get going from there.”
Indiana students overall showed improvement on their ISTEP scores in both math and language arts. Scores released yesterday by the Indiana Department of Education indicate 80.7 percent of students passed English, compared to 79.5 percent in 2013. Math scores went up from 83 to 83.5 percent statewide. Continue reading

The new alternative faith-based school, the Crossing, hosted an open house Wednesday at their location in Knox. So far about 10 students are enrolled to attend. They will be hosting another open house today from 8 a.m until 3 p.m at the old Sears store in the Mint Leaf Plaza off of U.S. 35.
Starke County’s newest school is set to open on Friday, Aug. 1. The Crossing has leased the old Sears retail location south of Knox on U.S. 35 for it’s alternative school. The mission statement on the Goshen-based nonprofit organization’s website says The Crossing believes in “empowering struggling students to become contributing members of their communities through academics, job training and faith-based mentoring.” Continue reading
The Knox Community School Board is doing things a little differently this time around and is holding their second bi-monthly meeting on a Tuesday. Tonight the board will meet at 6:30 p.m in the administrative office in the Palmer wing of the Knox Community Elementary School.

The Kid’s Closet Ministry at North Judson United Methodist Church is taking steps to equip Starke County youngsters with supplies for the start of school. They are hosting their second annual “Pack-a-Backpack” event on Aug. 4 and 5 at the church from 5 until 6:30 p.m. for all youngsters in need who attend local schools. First they need supplies. JAG students from nine schools in Northwest Indiana recently received scholarship awards totaling $215,434.
According to Miche Grant, Vice President at the Center of Workforce Innovations and the Northwest Indiana Workforce Board, the students who participated in the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program will have the opportunity to use this money to help pay for post-secondary education.
