Hydrant Removed, Boil Water Order in Effect for Affected Knox Residents

image (89)Crews from the Knox Water Department successfully removed a nonfunctioning fire hydrant by Wayne’s Lube Oil and Filter on Carlson Drive this morning.

Water Superintendent Todd Gardner told WKVI that residents on Carlson Drive and Pine Street from Henry Drive to Carlson Drive will need to boil water until water test results come back on Friday. The results will determine if the water is healthy for human consumption without the boil water order.

A fire hydrant was replaced behind the B&K Restaurant in Knox this week. Residents in that area are also encouraged to boil water until further notice.

Water Shutoff Expected Tuesday for a Few Knox Residents

The Knox Water Department will be shutting off the water in an area of the city on Tuesday.

Water Superintendent Todd Gardner told WKVI News that crews will be replacing a fire hydrant behind the B&K restaurant on Council Drive and installing a line valve in that area. In order to complete this task properly, water will be shut off to residents in the area of Council Drive, a portion of Henry Drive, Airway Drive and Carlson Drive.

When the water is turned back on, residents affected by the hydrant replacement will be under a boil water order. Gardner will keep WKVI informed on the timing of all events.

Knox Water Department Reports Minimal Frozen Water Lines This Season

The Knox Water Department had a mild winter this year compared to last season.

Superintendent Todd Gardner informed the Knox Board of Public Works members this week that there weren’t too many calls about frozen water pipes. There was one call, but Gardner said the line from the resident’s home to the city hookup is the issue. If the issue were to be repaired, it would be the homeowner’s responsibility to take care of the problem.

Final Knox Water Customers Thawed Out, Pipes Fixed

All of the Knox Water Department customers whose pipes froze over the winter have been thawed out.  Water Superintendent Todd Gardner also tells WKVI news that the last of the leaks have been repaired.

The bitterly cold temperatures and frozen ground took their toll on residents in Parkview Heights and elsewhere around the city due to shallow water lines that were put in the ground before the current code standard of five feet was adopted.

Gardner suggested at the last Knox Board of Works meeting that the city send reminder postcards to residents of the affected areas prior to the onset of cold weather next year advising them to let faucets run to prevent pipes from freezing. The city did adjust bills for customers whose use was excessive due to leaving their water turned on.

Continue Running Faucets; Frost Level Still Problematic

The temperature is above freezing, bringing welcome relief from this winter’s bitter cold temperatures, but local water and clerk-treasurer departments continue to urge area residents to keep the faucets running. The frost is still settling in, according to officials at the Knox Water Department, and while the ground may start feeling warm on top, the frost is still present below the surface.

Cold Weather, Old Lines Create Water Woes for Knox Residents

A handful of Knox residents are without water as a result of the sustained cold temperatures. Knox Water Superintendent Todd Gardner tells WKVI News a total of 19 residences, including two that are not occupied, mainly in the Parkview Heights area, are experiencing frozen water lines. “The water mains are shallow in that area. What’s happened is the ground’s turned into a block of ice around the water main, so when our customers turn their water off it’s only a matter of minutes and their service freezes up,” Gardner explains. ” When their service freezes up and it travels out into the mains, there’s nothing we can do to thaw them back out. What we’re asking is people to keep their water turned on and running to keep from freezing and also keep the mains from freezing. Running water won’t freeze, so we’re trying to get the point out. One of the problems we have is when it’s 20 and sunny everyone thinks they can turn their water off because it’s not going to freeze, but the problem is under ground three feet.” Continue reading

Knox Water Superintendent: Check for Water Leaks

Knox Water Superintendent Todd Gardner has notified WKVI that the latest statistics show that there is a larger-than-normal water consumption within the city’s residential and business districts.

Gardner believes that the 30% increase could be a combination of many small leaks that may have occurred in the extreme cold temperatures last week.

Gardner is asking residents to check in basements and crawl spaces to locate leaks. He notes that a leak that is the size of pencil lead can add up to over 500 gallons a day and will not affect the pressure of a faucet.

A proposal by the Knox water department superintendent will soon go to the council, after superintendent Todd Gardner told the Knox Board of Public Works that the water line going down State Road 8 east of the city is providing limited water to the area. With the upcoming construction of the new Starke County Jail facility near the intersection of State Road 8 and County Road 550 East, he said it’s imperative that the line be improved to ensure proper water service for that area.
