Knox Water Superintendent Todd Gardner is looking into replacing some older meters that better meet the need of the building’s user.
Gardner told the Knox Board of Public Works members last week that the revenue loss is quite steep.
Knox Water Superintendent Provides Tips for Winter
Knox Water Department Superintendent Todd Gardner has a few helpful tips for citizens as temperatures start to drop below freezing.
Gardner advises individuals to disconnect hoses from faucets so they can drain. He said a “frost free faucet” will freeze up and can break at temperatures just below freezing if a hose is left attached to it.
He also explained that homes with crawl spaces need to have those closed up as securely as possible. If crawlspace vents have louvers, or slats, they need to be closed up for the winter season. Continue reading
Brown Circle Project in Knox Complete
The Knox Water Department completed the Brown Circle water line replacement project.
Water Superintendent Todd Gardner told the Knox Board of Public Works last week that the total cost of the project was just under $84,000. This included the installation of 1,440 feet of new six-inch ductile pipe to replace the much smaller galvanized water main that serviced the entire neighborhood. Three fire hydrants were also installed so the entire area is now able to receive adequate fire protection.
Knox Water Department to Start Hydrant and Waterline Flushing Wednesday
The Knox Water Department will begin flushing waterlines and fire hydrants tomorrow morning.
Knox Water Superintendent Todd Garner said this procedure is performed to test the working order of the fire hydrants and to keep the water mains clean. Gardner said the work will be done during the day and should be completed, at the latest, by Tuesday of next week.
Keep an eye out for Knox Water Department crews while driving around town this week.

Knox Water Superintendent Outlines Plans for Brown Circle
The Knox Water Department’s list of proposed summer projects includes tying homes that are on a 2.5 inch galvanized line in to an existing 6 inch line. The old line on Brown Circle was run in the 1950s to accommodate trailer housing for Kingsbury Ordinance Plant employees during the Korean War. Knox Water Superintendent Todd Gardner told the board of works the homes built there in the 1960s just used the existing lines. Even though the city upgraded the area later, only a few homes are tied into the new line.

Knox Officials Prepare for Transition
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers has instructed city department heads to develop priority lists for the new administration. Dennis Estok is set to take over as mayor on Jan. 1.
He will decide what to do about two vehicles the city no longer uses. One is a Chevrolet Tahoe with a motor problem, and the other is a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car with transmission issues. Knox Water Department Replaces Obsolete Hydrants
Knox Water Department crews recently replaced a couple of fire hydrants that were part of the city’s original water system. Superintendent Todd Gardner says the new hydrants were installed on West Delaware Street at Pearl and Main Streets. The new hydrants have a six-inch flow capacity, compared to the four-inch of the previous ones. Water Superintendent Todd Gardner says the water flow capacity of the new ones has doubled as a result. Knox Water Crews to Remove Hydrant, Water Shutoff Expected
Water will be shut off to Knox residents again on Wednesday morning in order for street crews to remove a fire hydrant.
Residents on Carlson Drive and Pine Street from Henry Drive to Carlson Drive will be without water from about 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. CT. Water Superintendent Todd Gardner said a fire hydrant behind Wayne’s Lube Oil and Filter will be removed.
The Knox Water Department successfully replaced the fire hydrant behind the B&K Restaurant on Tuesday morning. The hydrant was a century old.

Knox Fire Hydrant Replacement Plan Presented
Several fire hydrants will be replaced in Knox this spring.
Water Superintendent Todd Gardner said the hydrants on John Street in front of the apartment building will need to be changed out. He said they are over 100 years old and are not functioning. He’s concerned because there isn’t adequate fire protection in that area if a structure fire were to occur. Another hydrant on the corner of John and Prettyman Streets will be replaced, as it is broken off at the ground.
Knox Water Department Lifts Boil Water Order
Knox residents in the East Lake and John Street areas no longer have to boil water. A second round of lab tests found no problems with water quality after the city changed three fire hydrants in that area earlier this week. Continue reading

Knox Water Line Project to Close Road in Front of Post Office
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers updated the city council members last night about a water line project in front of the U.S. Post Office that is expected to that road for today only.
Street department crews, water department crews and sewer department crews will tackle the project on Washington Street between Shield Street and Portland Street. Mayor Chambers said Water Superintendent Todd Gardner believes this will help decrease the freezing pipe issues in that area.
