WKVI’s Sports Bet Food Drive Continues

Nathan Food DriveThere’s still time to make the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry the big winner in this year’s Knox v. North Judson-San Pierre football rivalry. WKVI Sports Director Nathan Welter is a Knox graduate, and news director Mary Perren is a North Judson alum. Each year they make a friendly wager on the outcome of the county rivalry. Since North Judson won, Nathan had to dye his beard blue and host an hour-long food drive at Heartland Market, formerly Ray’s Super Foods, in downtown North Judson on Saturday. Thanks to the generosity of all who came out, he nearly filled a grocery cart and collected quite a bit of cash as well. Continue reading

WKVI Sports Director Nathan Welter isn’t done paying off his bet on the outcome of the Knox v. North Judson football game just yet. He’s a Knox graduate, and news director Mary Perren is a N.J.-S.P. alum, so they make a friendly wager on the game each year. North Judson beat Knox 21-14 at Community Field two weeks ago. Last week Nathan served lunch at the high school cafeteria and got glitter dumped on him by the four captains from the Knox game during the homecoming pep rally. Starke Dems Tap Hoffer for Coroner Position

 The Starke County Democrats have elected a new Coroner.

A caucus was held Wednesday night at the VFW in Knox to select a new candidate for the job. Filling the position during a special caucus was needed following the resignation former Coroner Adam Gray – who cited personal and professional reasons behind the move.

Hoping to develop successful careers as adults, students from Knox High school and some from the 8th grade will be meeting with college representatives and counselors today at the “Fall Career Fair.” Tomorrow junior high school students will participate in a “mini college fair” during the lunch periods. Starke County Commissioners Defer Forest Discussion

Board member Debbie Mix told the commissioners park board members are looking at other sources of grant funds to cover the cost of constructing a bypass ditch along the south end of the property to alleviate drainage issues. Local Officials Dedicate Reconstructed Intersection

Ribbon CuttingStarke County Economic Development Foundation officials yesterday joined business and local government leaders to celebrate the completion of the road through the Knox Industrial Park. Thanks to their combined efforts, the intersection of Klockner Drive is wider between Culver Road and north of Pacific Avenue with new curbs in place. SCEDF Executive Director Charlie Weaver says the project has gotten more positive feedback than anything they’ve done in the past two decades. Continue reading

He’s a Knox graduate known for looking for NBA expert picks and winning big. This time however, he made a different kind of wager with news director Mary Perren, a N.J.-S.P. graduate on the outcome of last week’s game. North Judson won, so Welter had to pay up. Harvest Fest Gets Underway in Downtown Knox

Festivities get underway this morning at 10 with an opening prayer and flag raising ceremony, followed by a pet parade. Town-wide yard sales are also taking place. Arrowhead Country RC&D Explains Grant Framework for Starke Forest Recommendation

A local conservation agency says they don’t require specialist input prior to delivering on grant fund requests.

The comments come after a recommendation by the Starke County Park Board to seek grants from Arrowhead Country RC&D. If selected, monies would be used to construct a bypass ditch across the south side of the Starke County Forest. The work aims to move water around a decades-old marsh, preventing damage to wildlife in the area.
