Two focus group sessions are planned this week to gather information from residents, merchants, community leaders and others to be part of the city of Knox’s comprehensive plan.
Input from these sessions will help the city determine what types of improvements need to be made and strategies to make those improvements that have been deemed a priority.
Crews working on the 300 East project in the Knox Industrial Park are moving onto another phase of the project.
According to the project manager, the west side of County Road 300 East is complete and now workers will begin construction on the east side of the road. They will be working at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and County Road 300 East today. That intersection will be closed today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. CT to ensure maximum work with a minimum closure time. Emergency vehicles will be allowed access.
The Knox City Council members received information about the budget this week from Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston.
The city, along with all other taxing entities in Starke County, is part of a pilot program with the state this year. A meeting was held on Oct. 6 where a state analysis was reviewed. Houston said the county then provided the city with a non-binding recommendation. The city could face a huge cut in 2015.
With the arrival of fall, leaves are starting to gather in yards and it’s time for the removal of those leaves.
Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost asks you to be cautious if you plan to burn leaves on your property.
“First of all, try not to burn on a windy day,” said Pfost. “It seems like that’s when we have the most fires is when it’s really windy. Choose a calm day. Also, make sure you’re compliant with local ordinances. Have a water source and try not to burn outside of what you can handle. Don’t burn after dark.”
A long-time resident of the Golden Living Center in Knox was joined by many of his friends at a “going-away” party yesterday.

61-year-old Tim Crum, who, every day, stakes out the southwest corner of that room for his own, is moving to Branson, Missouri. Tim has made this care facility his home for the past 37 years. He’s moving closer family members.
Starke County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a crash at the intersection of State Roads 8 and 23 that sent one person to the hospital via MedFlight. The wreck happened around 6 last evening. The officers found one person pinned in a vehicle, according to a sheriff’s department news release. Continue reading
The Knox City Council members considered a request to add an officer from the Knox City Police Department to the Pulaski County SWAT team.
Officer Chad Dulin explained to the council members Tuesday night that he is interested in being a part of the team to help with response time in the case of a call out and for the training he can gain. He can share any tactical information with his fellow officers and it can be a refresher course at the same time.

The Knox City Council members discussed the use of the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center for free community meals to be prepared and served by church members without paying the rental fee.
Deb McIntire proposed the idea where she explained that it is her goal to get members from eight churches on board to prepare the meals at home and to serve them at the community center. Volunteers will be setting up the room, serving food for a couple of hours and then clean the room used.
The Knox City Council members will meet tonight where they will resume a conversation pertaining to the use of the Nancy J. Denbowski Community Center by church groups to serve free meals without paying the rental fee.
The request to host the meals was made several months ago by Deb McIntire who explained in a letter to Mayor Rick Chambers that different church groups would cook and serve meals in the community center for the general public. The center would be used one day a week for four hours.
Robert Corbin’s case will go to trial.
Corbin appeared with his attorneys Friday morning for a status hearing in his case in Starke Circuit Court. Indiana Supreme Court justices unanimously reversed an Indiana Court of Appeals’ decision recently to dismiss the case where two felony counts of attempted child seduction were filed against Corbin.
Starke County voters can learn where candidates for local office stand on issues during a series of weekend forums. Larry and Deb Wappel are sponsoring the events in Knox, North Judson and Hamlet. She says the candidates will be asked tough questions about things like their leadership philosophy, what sets them apart from others running for the same office and how they will pay for any sort of new program or service they are proposing. The candidates were given the prepared questions in advance. Audience members will also have a chance to submit written questions for the candidates. A bipartisan panel will screen them and make sure they are respectful. Continue reading
The five members of the Starke County Park Board will have plenty of reading material prior to their first meeting. The Starke County Commissioners are sending them welcome packets, which will include copies of the state statute under which the board was formed and the state law pertaining to camping on public properties. One of their first challenges will be to decide whether to allow year-round camping at Bass Lake Beach and Campground. The park board members will also get a copy of the management lease between the county and Richard Callahan. The board is charged with oversight and management of the Starke County Forest and other county-owned public lands.
Gov. Mike Pence has declared this “Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day.” Kankakee Valley REMC members are spending it giving back to the community. They are adding a new section of privacy and security fence at the Phoenix House in Knox. It’s a transitional facility for women and children who have left home to escape domestic violence. They are also painting a 700-foot-long fence for longtime REMC member Mrs. Dolores Hammerlund at her home on 350 West in Knox. Continue reading

A Knox man faces a theft charge in LaPorte. Rusty Reuille, 32, was arrested there Tuesday, Oct. 7 on a LaPorte County warrant for theft and a misdemeanor failure to appear charge for driving while suspended.
Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department eradicated marijuana plants in sober living Austin Texas, Austin recovery treatment options.

Deputies received information from the Indiana State Police Marijuana Eradication Team of an outdoor marijuana grow in the 5000 S. block of 300 E. in Knox.
Approximately 60 marijuana plants were found growing in a garden behind the residence. Officers removed the plants from the property.
The Starke County Highway Department is wrapping up road improvements for the year. Superintendent Rik Ritzler says they’ve improved more than 120 miles of roads through a combination of chip and fog sealing, asphalt paving and wedging and crack sealing. That’s the most road miles improved in a single year by the Starke County Highway Department. Continue reading
