LeRoy Gudeman Retires from Law Practice after 57 Years

After having a long, successful law practice in Starke County, LeRoy Gudeman has decided to retire.
Gudeman worked by himself out of the same building across the street from the Starke County Courthouse in downtown Knox since moving to the area in 1957. He has been a part of the community in many activities and has been on the Kankakee Valley Broadcasting board of directors that oversees operations at WKVI for many years.
Local Kids Compete in the Bass Lake Pageant Today
The Bass Lake Festival is next weekend and but the fun starts early this weekend with the annual pageant.
Boys and girls from ages 3 to 6 will be competing for the title of Little Miss or Little Mister Bass Lake. Ladies from the ages of 14 to 18 are vying for the title of Miss Bass Lake.
The pageants are this afternoon at the Bass Lake Property Owner’s Association Building. Contestants must be there at 3 p.m. Doors open to the public at 4 p.m for the Little Miss and Little Mister Bass Lake Pageant and the Miss Bass Lake Pageant starts at 6 p.m.

Competitive Grant Awarded to Help Treat Offenders with Mental Disorders

A grant in the amount of $175,000 has been awarded locally to provide treatment to adult offenders diagnosed with a mental disorder.
Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall and Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper worked together with Porter-Starke Services to secure this competitive grant which requires no local match money. Only 12 grants were distributed.
Starke County Highway Department Continues Chip Sealing Roads

Portions of Toto Road east of Knox will be closed today for chip sealing. The Starke County Highway Department will be working between 700 and 1200 East. They started chip sealing roads in Oregon Township earlier this week. So far they’ve finished 3.8 miles of roads in Koontz Lake, and 2.4 more on 700 North, 800 North and 850 North. They’ve also done quite a few sections of road in Washington Township.

Thermo Pride Engineering Design Team Earns Award Nomination
An engineering design team from North Judson-based Thermo Pride is a nominee for a prestigious award from the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana. The Starke County Economic Development Foundation nominated director of engineering Everett James and project engineer Michael Sharkozy for the Team Innovators Award for their application of an existing technology to a new process. By doing so, they created an extremely safe, ultra-high efficiency oil-fired furnace for residential and commercial heating. Continue reading

An interim director is running Starke County EMS until the county commissioners can hire a full-time replacement for Paul Matthewson, who recently resigned from the job. The Starke County Commissioners this week unanimously ratified Keith Emigh’s appointment to that position. Fireworks Show a Success in Starke County
The fireworks show at the Starke County Airport held one week ago today was well attended, according to Knox Mayor Rick Chambers.
Chambers told the Knox City Council members this week that with the fireworks committee’s fundraisers, gate collections, donations from the three county commissioners, several monetary donations from businesses and individuals, the town of Hamlet and a generous donation from the town of North Judson, the only loss the city of Knox will realize is $767. The show was $8,550 and $7,783 was collected.
Scholarships Still Available Through Starke County Community Foundation
Scholarships totaling nearly $30,000 have been given to 24 students through the Starke County Community Foundation and more scholarships are up for grabs.
Five additional scholarships are currently available to high school graduates and to non-traditional students.
The Back Home Again in Indiana Scholarship is specifically for non-traditional students and gives college scholarships as well as supporting those who wish to further their education and/or training as a way of enhancing their employment skills.
