The Knox City Council members approved a transfer to help cover the cost of snow removal.
Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston told the city council that the street department did what they could, but they have gone over budget in the snow removal line item. The contractor that removes snow in the downtown area also worked harder this season and charged a little more.
The Knox Community School Board members discussed the air conditioning units at the middle school during their meeting this week.
Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the units are getting older and showing some great wear and tear. The company has offered the corporation a special program.
The Knox Community School Board members discussed entering into a contract with The Crossing alternative school during their meeting this week.
Superintendent A.J. Gappa said The Crossing is a second-chance opportunity for students who have dropped out of high school, been expelled or transitioned to home school. Education is delivered in a way that best fits students.
Gappa confirmed that the board is moving forward to help those students.

Haugh says the organization was a part of his life when he was growing up in North Judson and is very important to Starke County because of all of the services they provide. He and former WSBT sportscaster Charlie Adams will be at the 5 p.m. event, which will include a live auction of a lot of sports memorabilia. Items up for bid include items from the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and footballs signed by Chicago Bears players. The Knox City Council members discussed a revised fee ordinance Tuesday night.
Under Section 1, Article VI, Sec. 4-251. Location improvement permit fees, a commercial/industrial permit for new construction, additions and remodeling will be left at $5,000. In a previous discussion, the members considered an increase to $7,500, but later determined the $5,000 fee was sufficient.
The Starke County Plan Commission is cracking down on enforcement of unsafe and blighted buildings. President Dennis Estok told the county commissioners they’ve restructured their enforcement letters and means of taking owners to court but still have a backlog of structures that need to be torn down.
“You’ve got to have some seed money, because if they don’t do it you can go in there and take care of these unsafe structures,” Estok said. “Then basically what you do is you fine them, and you bill them. If they don’t pay the bill, then you put a special assessment on their taxes. You wind up getting the property, and then you re-sell the property to try to recoup some of your cost.” Continue reading
An ordinance amendment will be going back to the drawing board as the Knox City Council members failed to pass it on final action.
Discussion concerning an amendment to ordinance #1142 regarding outdoor storage and the setback distance for displays was the issue that hung up the approval of the ordinance.
IU Health Starke Hospital recently underwent a rigorous accreditation process. President Craig Felty says the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation’s findings are a nationally recognized symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to “They come in and they more or less go from top to bottom in your hospital,” Felty says. “They look at everything from the physical structure to our processes to our quality outcomes to how we credential and privilege our physicians. It’s a very thorough four-day survey that’s done every three years.”
The survey team comes in unannounced. Felty says the hospital staff has to be in a “state of constant readiness” for them. The Joint Commission team members spent four days at IU Health Starke Hospital, touring the building, tracking the progress of individual patients through the hospital and talking to cart and bedside care providers.
Felty says the Joint Commission’s report was overall very positive. “We had absolutely no findings in the actual patient care division, which was absolutely wonderful. We have an older facility, and so we do have challenges that come with that. A couple of our findings were related to the age of the facility and things that pop up here or there. The few findings that we had, we are very happy to say and very proud of the colleagues of Starke Hospital, or physician partners, who we could not do without. Physicians are a huge part of our organization. We are just very proud to say that we had a remarkable survey, one of the best surveys I’ve had in my 20-plus years of experience with the Joint Commission.”

Title 1 preschool screenings at Knox Community Elementary School will be held on two Fridays in May.
Any child who will be four or five years old by Aug. 1 is eligible for the screening. Those children who demonstrate the greatest need for assistance in meeting kindergarten readiness skills will have an opportunity to take part in a morning or afternoon session for the 2014-2015 school year. Transportation for both morning and afternoon sessions will be provided by the school corporation.
The annual IU Health and Community Services of Starke County Health Fair will take place Tuesday, May 13 from 2 until 7 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in downtown Knox. IU Health Starke Hospital President Craig Felty says both organizations are dedicated to improving the health of local residents. He says the health fair will feature a number of educational exhibits and several types of screenings. Blood pressure and blood sugar checks, breast exams, oral cancer screenings and osteoporosis checks will all be offered. Also take-home colorectal cancer screening kits will be available. Felty says checking for these types of conditions is critical in order to catch and treat problems before they become significant. IU Health Starke Hospital is also licensed to inspect child safety seats. Technicians will be available at the health fair to make sure car seats are properly installed and sized for the child. This year’s health fair will also feature a coloring area for youngsters so parents and other adults can more easily browse the exhibits and take part in the screenings.
All of the Knox Water Department customers whose pipes froze over the winter have been thawed out. Water Superintendent Todd Gardner also tells WKVI news that the last of the leaks have been repaired.
The bitterly cold temperatures and frozen ground took their toll on residents in Parkview Heights and elsewhere around the city due to shallow water lines that were put in the ground before the current code standard of five feet was adopted.
Gardner suggested at the last Knox Board of Works meeting that the city send reminder postcards to residents of the affected areas prior to the onset of cold weather next year advising them to let faucets run to prevent pipes from freezing. The city did adjust bills for customers whose use was excessive due to leaving their water turned on.
As the weather warms up, many people are getting into the spring cleaning mode. Officials at the Stake County Environmental Management Office remind you that the recycling bins located in the county are not for everyday trash, household chemicals or construction materials.
When garbage is dumped into and around the bins it contaminates the recyclable items. If the sites continue to be used as a “landfill”, they will be removed. They are to be considered to be placed for your convenience and are a privilege.
The staff at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox are completing work since the new children’s wing was recently opened.
Library Director Sheila Urwiler said they are moving some shelving and installing some new furniture. Every attempt is being made to tie up loose ends in the project.
James Campbell pleaded not guilty to a charge of Arson as a Class A felony in an initial hearing in Starke Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon.
Campbell is accused of intentionally setting a fire on March 20 at his business known as Starke County Recycling at the corner of U.S. 35 and Toto Road south of Knox. A Bass Lake fireman was injured while battling the blaze at the business. Eight fire departments were called to the scene to contain the fire.
The 7th annual Starke County Youth Club Radiothon will take place right here at WKVI on Friday, May 2.
Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says the club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of local children.
“We provide everything from academic support, helping kids with their homework or providing individual tutoring, to giving kids enrichment experiences like culture, drama and music. Also connecting kids with their families and the larger community through guest speakers service projects and community service endeavors,” Szakonyi says.
It’s been a long winter and warm temperatures are tempting some to get out and get yard work done. This prompts leaf raking and in some instances, burning leaves and other yard debris. Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost wants to you take caution if you decide to burn yard debris on your property.
Firefighters from three area departments kept a tractor-trailer fire on U.S. 30 from spreading to a couple of nearby buildings and managed to save most of the truck’s cargo. The Hamlet Fire Department was called to U.S. 30 just west of the Stay 4 Less Motel just after 7 p.m. A semi registered to Hikma Transportation, Inc. in Minneapolis, Minn. had caught fire, and the wind caused the flames to spread to the field on the north side of the road. The driver was not injured. The truck was hauling a load of tractor tires, but the flames were contained before they could catch fire. The Knox and Hanna Fire Departments also responded.
Justin Reynolds from Knox High School was recognized at the 2014 Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Career Development Conference.
According to a published report on www.LaPorteCountyLife.com, the final state competition on March 14 found Reynolds in first place in the category of Financial Literacy.
