Starke County residents have one more day to weigh in on their vision for the county’s park and recreation facilities.
The Mishawaka-based Troyer group has been hired to craft a five-year parks and recreation plan for Starke County. As part of that process, they’re trying to gauge usage of the county’s recreational areas.
Specifically they are looking at Bass Lake Beach and Campground, Koontz Lake, the Starke County Forest and the trail system as assets to the county. Continue reading

Food Pantry Emerges Victorious in WKVI Sports Bet
Starke County residents who need a hand up are the big winners in the good-natured bet between WKVI’s Nathan Welter and Mary Perren over the outcome of the recent Knox v. North Judson-San Pierre football game. Since Nathan is a graduate and Knox and they lost, part of his payoff was hosting an hour-long food drive at Heartland Markets in North Judson. WKVI Spearheads Community Clean-Up
WKVI is teaming up with former Knox Mayor Nancy Dembowski to clean up the community. Appropriately we are starting with the first thing everybody sees when the roll into town, the Train Depot visitor center across from Wythogan Park.
This week on Wednesday, join us at the depot from 4 until 6 pm equipped with your gloves, rakes, shovels and any other items that will assist with the clean up. Library Board Approves Facilities Upgrades
Major repairs will be made to the parking lot of the Schricker Main Library in Knox sometime in the next two weeks, weather permitting. Library officials advise every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to patrons while the work is being done and stay open as much as possible. A bulldozer, two dump trucks and other equipment will be parked at the library during the project. It’s been in the planning stages for several months but was delayed due to rain.
Library director Rose Frost says fines will be forgiven during the repair process in case people can’t park to return materials. Continue reading
Starke United Fund Launches Capital Campaign
The Starke United Fund supports initiatives that promote financial stability and independence, programs that help children and youth succeed and projects that strengthen and support families and improve the health of our community. Each year, members with the Starke United Fund work to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying issues in our community and empowering citizens.
Starke United works in collaboration with various other agencies and members of the community. Last year thanks to generous donations, nearly $30,000 was granted to many of Starke County’s non-profit organizations. Starke United works very hard to assist as many people as possible, but they can’t do it alone. As the 2015 Starke United Fund Campaign kicks off, you are asked to join in and lend a hand. K9 Assists in Apprehension of Robbery Suspect
Officers from several Starke County law enforcement agencies assisted in the apprehension of a man at a Koontz Lake residence on an out-of-county robbery warrant. They responded to a home in the 7700 block of Tippecanoe Drive this morning to arrest 30-year-old Cody Cooley on a warrant from Dearborn County. A news release from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office indicates they spotted him through a sliding door trying to hide in an upstairs closet. Continue reading

Kids Closet Receives a Plethora of Supplies for Upcoming Back-to-School Event
Kids Closet Ministry annually provides school supplies to underprivileged children in Starke County with their Pack-a-Backpack event. Community members get the chance to contribute during their school supply drives. This year while Kids Closet was posted outside the Dollar General stores in North Judson and Knox they received an ample amount of supplies from weekend shoppers. However it was the donations from two other local foundations that helped provide the new backpacks for all the donated supplies. Continue reading
IU Health Urgent Care Facility Available in LifePlex
If you are currently between primary care physicians or need to receive medical attention for any reason there is a local facility available to you. Lisa Jones with IU Health shared the details with WKVI, “We have urgent care in the LifePlex building and we do feel like its a secret that not many know about.
