Knox Man Injured in Accident

A Knox man was injured in a single vehicle accident in LaPorte County.

LaPorte County Police officers responded to a call at 12:07 this morning of a car in the ditch at 1500 S. 100 W. in LaPorte County. Eugene Sinn, 57, told police that he didn’t remember how he got there or how long he was there. According to LaPorte County officials, the officer reportedly asked Sinn if he had been drinking prior to the accident and stated that he had been drinking. He was taken to the hospital for medical treatment for facial cuts and a laceration over his upper lip.

LaPorte Man Arrested on Warrant for Dealing Cocaine

A LaPorte man was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for Dealing Cocaine, a Class A Felony.

26-year-old Anthony Flores, of 605 Fremont Street in LaPorte was taken into custody at his home without incident and is currently in the LaPorte County Jail. His initial hearing in LaPorte Circuit Court is scheduled for Friday, February 10th.

This arrest was the result of a four week investigation into the distribution of cocaine in the City of LaPorte as well as LaPorte County. Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer credits this arrest on a team effort between the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department and the LaPorte and Michigan City Police Departments. North Judson Man Escapes Serious Harm after Head-on Collision; Michigan City Man Dies

A North Judson man sustained minor injuries in an accident that claimed the life of a Michigan City man on Saturday.

Michael Kieszkowski, 45, of Michigan City, was reportedly highly intoxicated when he crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 421 near County Road 1000 South. Keith Belcher, 20, of North Judson told LaPorte County police that he was southbound on U.S. 421 when Kieszkowski began flashing his high-beam headlights as he approached in the opposing lane. Belcher said he did not have his high-bream headlights on and flashed his to signal that he was not using them. Kieszkowski then reportedly veered into Belcher’s lane and Belcher told police could not avoid a head-on collision.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Opens Prescription Drop Site

If you have some unneeded or unwanted prescription medication and you’re not sure how to get rid of it, you’re in luck. LaPorte County Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer has announced that there is a new Prescription Pill Drop Site in the lobby of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, located at 809 State Street in LaPorte. The box is provided to give citizens a place to dispose of their unused or out-of-date prescription medication and ensures proper disposal.

Jerrold Minix Arrested on Active Warrants

Former Starke County resident, 31-year-old Jerrod L. Minix, was arrested on two active arrest warrants on Tuesday.

Police in LaPorte County received information on the whereabouts of Minix and officers from the Michigan City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, LaPorte City Police Department and the United States Marshals Service set out to arrest Minix. They arrived at 115 Tall Timbers Court in Michigan City and surrounded the residence. Police then conducted a search of the residence after speaking with the female owner of the residence and Minix was found hiding underneath insulation in the attic. Minix was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Michigan City Police Department.

LaPorte Homeowner Finds Home Burglarized, Injures Suspect

Two juveniles were arrested yesterday after they burglarized a home and the homeowner had wounded one of the suspects.

An officer from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department responded to a home in the 7800 North block of County Road 175 East, or Fail Road. The homeowner said that he discovered his home was being burglarized and the suspects were still inside the home. When police arrived on scene, the victim had shot one of the suspects in the hand. The suspect was transported to IU Health LaPorte Hospital and the other juvenile suspect was transported to the LaPorte County Juvenile Justice Center. After the injured suspect was cleared from the hospital, he was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

Five Arrested in LaPorte on Drug Charges

Five people were arrested after a drug raid in LaPorte County.

Investigators from the Metro Operations Unit and detectives from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office conducted surveillance in the 300 block of State Street in LaPorte for drug activity. When officers saw a suspect enter the area, officers approached him and he fled. Michael Mikowski, of LaPorte, was quickly apprehended and a K9 found crack cocaine in his possession. He was arrested on preliminary charges of Dealing Cocaine and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Wanatah Woman Jailed on 20 Counts of Child Molestation

A Wanatah woman was arrested Thursday on 20 Class B Felony counts of Child Molestation.

An ongoing criminal investigation by the Indiana State Police found that Tara Tryon, 21, allegedly molested a three-year-old child.  The Indiana State Department of Child Services and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department reportedly received this information which initiated the investigation.

Registered Sex Offender Arrested for Multiple Charges

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department officers arrested a 25-year-old LaPorte man on Thursday in conjunction with several counts of dealing in narcotics.

Indiana Department of Corrections Parole Officers and investigators from the Michigan City Police Street Crimes unit arrested Virgil Marshall for two outstanding warrants for Class B Felony Dealing in Schedule II Controlled Substances as well as a parole violation. LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit had conducted an investigation and Marshall was identified as distributing narcotics in the City of LaPorte.

North Judson Man Arrested on Charges of Auto Theft, Criminal Mischief

Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department apprehended a North Judson man after he was allegedly involved in a bar fight and ended up destroying a motel room Wednesday night in North Judson.

Police were called to the Route 10 Bar and Grill after an alleged fight had occurred between two individuals. The suspect, Danny Manns, left the premises. Police later found the suspect vehicle in the park and it was unoccupied. Police learned that the vehicle Manns was driving belonged to Joe Brown of Knox who said Manns should not have been in possession of the vehicle. Police searched the area and was unable to find Manns.

Suspect in Pursuit Incident in San Pierre Arrested in LaPorte County

LaPorte City Police Department officers arrested Robert Reed, 33, of LaPorte, after a police pursuit.  Reed is also suspected of being involved in a theft and pursuit incident in San Pierre on May 22nd.

According to Detective Andy Hynek of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, Reed was spotted in the LaPorte City limits on Friday, May 27th in a suspected stolen vehicle from Starke County. LaPorte City officers initiated a traffic stop and Reed would not pull over. A pursuit began and he was eventually taken into custody. He was arrested on charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Habitual Traffic Violator. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department has also filed charges on Reed which include four counts of Theft and one count of Burglary. The LaPorte County charges stem from a two month investigation in which Reed was allegedly involved in the act of stealing trailers, vehicles, RVs and tools.

Cause Determined in Death of LaPorte County Jail Inmate

LaPorte County Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer has released further information regarding the death of an in-custody inmate at the La Porte County Security Complex. Dead is Roy E. Young, 37, of Michigan City, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at 7:42 AM on Saturday March 19th, 2011 at Indiana University Health LaPorte Hospital.

An autopsy was performed on Monday March 21st, 2011. The official cause of death is cardiac arrhythmia induced by a drug overdose. The death is being termed “accidental.” During the autopsy, a plastic “tie off” baggie was found in the decedent’s intestinal track. Evidence is consistent with the statement given to police by Mr. Young’s cellmate that Mr. Young told him he had “swallowed cocaine” during the LaPorte Police traffic stop in an attempt to prevent being arrested for being in possession of the drug. Toxicology results are pending.

Police Officers to Patrol Indiana Roadways for Impaired Drivers during the New Year’s Day Holiday

Police officers will be out during the New Year’s Day holiday weekend and they will be on the lookout for drunk drivers. Jeremiah Patrick, Coordinator of the Starke County Traffic Safety Partnership, reports that officers from the organization will be out in force this weekend. The Starke County Traffic Safety Partnership includes officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, Knox City Police Department and the North Judson Police Department. Officers from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department will also be out in force to help detect drunk drivers.

Reward Offered for the Return of Stolen Locomotive Horns

The Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department are seeking information leading to the arrest and conviction of two thieves that stole locomotive horns from railroad locomotives at the LaCrosse Ballpark.

The incident happened on Sunday, November 21st between 9:00-10:00 p.m. CT. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of these unknown suspects.
