Kid’s Closet Ministry Hosts School Supply Drive for Local Students

Kids Closet_01Kids Closet Ministry is a local organization that benefits Starke County children in need. Not only do they provide clothes and shoes to kids all year long but they also annually provide school supplies to students who cannot afford them. Clerk’s Office Says Chances “Very Low” Unrecognized Resident Cast Ballot in North Judson Town Election

 
 

Officials with the Starke County Clerk’s office says they have methods in place to ensure residents cast election ballots in the proper place.

The comments follow the realization that the Town of North Judson did not properly file an annexation ordinance from 2001, and an ordinance outlining election Wards from 2012, with the Starke County Clerk’s office. Because the ordinances were not properly filed, the Starke County Clerk’s office is unable to recognize them until they’re recertified.

Elections in North Judson may have been affected after the Town failed to file a pair of ordinances with the Starke County Clerk’s office.

It was learned on Monday that an ordinance from 2001 outlining the annexation of land near North Judson, as well as an ordinance from 2012 redrawing election Wards, were filed with the Starke County Recorder’s office, but not the Clerk’s office. That means the changes are not recognized by the County until the ordinances are recertified.

North Judson Completes Truck Route Signs

The former First Farmers Bank and Trust building on Lane Street in North Judson will soon be the town hall.

The Town of North Judson has now finalized signs specifying where trucks can travel.

Town Council members approved an ordinance earlier this year creating a route that commercial trucking vehicles can travel while within the town limits. The ordinance not only helps prevent traffic issues, but also helps maintain the quality of North Judson’s roads.

NJ-SP SB Brainstorms Ideas for Political Action Committee to Assist with Referendum

pacFollowing their meeting Monday evening, the NJSP School Board held a work session to discuss the formation of a Political Action Committee. They considered various community members who could potentially be contacted to assist the school with the referendum process. The P.A.C would be responsible for making sure community members are registered to vote and spreading the word about the corporation and why the referendum is needed. Continue reading

N.J.-S.P. School Board Moves Forward With School Funding Referendum

North Judson-San Pierre Admin buildingThough the school board typically meets on the third Tuesday of every month, the North Judson-San Pierre Board of Trustees held a special school board meeting yesterday evening in which they considered and deliberated the need for a referendum tax levy to carry out their public education duty.

This means that in November the public will be asked to either confirm or deny the implementation of a property tax rate that will not exceed forty-seven and half cents on each one hundred dollars for the purpose of funding the general operations of the North Judson-San Pierre school corporation. This maximum rate will be reviewed annually during the seven calendar years immediately following the holding of the referendum. It will never exceed higher than this approved rate but could potentially be lowered based on revenue and expenditures. Continue reading

Kids ranging from ages 7 through 18 have the chance to showcase their talent during this singing competition scheduled for Monday, July 13 at 8 pm in the show arena at the Starke County 4-H fair. Society of Innovators Still Seeking Nominees

society of innovators logoThe Society of Innovators at Ivy Tech Community College is looking for northwest Indiana residents who are finding new solutions to old problems. Nominations are being accepted through Monday for innovators in the seven-county northwest Indiana region. Past honorees include BraunAbility founder Ralph Braun and the North Judson-based Kemin-Lambert Spearmint Team. Society of Innovators Managing Director John Davies says innovation is universal.

Little Progress Made Over Grave Dispute

The former First Farmers Bank and Trust building on Lane Street in North Judson will soon be the town hall.

A Starke County family that purchased their grave sites 20 years ago at Highland Cemetery says they will continue to pursue what they believe is the only answer.

Marilyn Derrickson says that as her husband was measuring for headstone foundations earlier this year, they discovered there wasn’t enough room at the site. The family owns several plots, but is missing a space due to the fact that someone else is buried in one of them.

Do Your Part, Plus Some Art with the First Ever Community Canvas Fundraiser

 

The cost of fireworks has sky rocketed! To help account for rising prices, various fireworks fundraisers have been happening leading up to the Starke County Independence Day celebration. According to Mayor Rick Chambers the display costs several thousand dollars. Since the show is provided for the community, members of the community are asked to give a little to help with the cost.

A unique new fundraiser is set to take place tonight from 6 until 8 pm in the Nancy Dembowski Community Center. For only $25 you can participate in Knox’s first ever Community Canvas event. Continue reading
