The Crossing Set to Open Next Week in Knox
Starke County’s newest school is set to open on Friday, Aug. 1. The Crossing has leased the old Sears retail location south of Knox on U.S. 35 for it’s alternative school. The mission statement on the Goshen-based nonprofit organization’s website says The Crossing believes in “empowering struggling students to become contributing members of their communities through academics, job training and faith-based mentoring.” Continue reading

Bass Lake Festival Pageant Results
The winners of last weekend’s Bass Lake Festival Pageant walked away cash prizes as well as other gifts. Friends and family gathered at the Bass Lake Property Owners Association building over the weekend to witness this year’s Bass Lake Festival Pageant.
The title of Little Miss Bass Lake went to 4-year-old Leah Novotney. Her mini escort was 4-year-old Isaiah Allsop who was granted the title of Little Mister Bass Lake. Both lucky little winners received $50 each. Stephanie Thompson was the pageant coordinator for the 3 to 6 category.
North Judson Council Sets Budget Workshop
Members of the North Judson Town Council will meet Thursday, July 31 at 8 a.m. at the community center to work on the 2015 budget. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry says that meeting is open to the public. The initial hearing on the spending proposal will take place Monday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. at the community center. A final adoption date has not been set yet pending a non-binding review by the Starke County Council. That’s new this year and will take place sometime in October. Starke County is part of a pilot program for that process.
Kankakee Valley REMC Shows Support for the Starke County Fair with a Generous Donation
Kankakee Valley REMC is committed to serving their community. They provide electric services to approximately 18,000 individuals in Starke, Pulaski, Porter, Lake, Marshall, St. Joseph and La Porte counties.
Starke County Council Establishes Park Board
Starke County now has a parks and recreation board. The Starke County Council established the body to oversee amenities like the Bass Lake Beach and Campground, Starke County Forest and other county-owned recreational areas. Continue reading

N.J.-S.P. Revises Budget Adoption Calendar
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board has revised its budget adoption calendar. The corporation was selected as part of a state pilot program and as a result cannot adopt a budget until Oct. 15. The Starke County Council will conduct a public hearing on Monday, Aug. 18 on the school corporation’s general, debt, pension and transportation funds. The next day the school board will meet in special session to adopt the 2015 Capital Projects Fund and Bus Replacement Plan. Continue reading
North Judson-Wayne Township Library Director to Retire
The long-time director at the North Judson-Wayne Township Library, Jane Ellen Felchuk, has decided to retire.
Felchuk said she will be leaving after 38 years at the library.
“It was lots of fun and it was a challenge,” said Felchuk. “We feel the library has grown and I had a great staff so it was easy to do lots of things.”
Local Kids Compete in the Bass Lake Pageant Today
The Bass Lake Festival is next weekend and but the fun starts early this weekend with the annual pageant.
Boys and girls from ages 3 to 6 will be competing for the title of Little Miss or Little Mister Bass Lake. Ladies from the ages of 14 to 18 are vying for the title of Miss Bass Lake.
The pageants are this afternoon at the Bass Lake Property Owner’s Association Building. Contestants must be there at 3 p.m. Doors open to the public at 4 p.m for the Little Miss and Little Mister Bass Lake Pageant and the Miss Bass Lake Pageant starts at 6 p.m.

Competitive Grant Awarded to Help Treat Offenders with Mental Disorders
A grant in the amount of $175,000 has been awarded locally to provide treatment to adult offenders diagnosed with a mental disorder.
Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall and Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper worked together with Porter-Starke Services to secure this competitive grant which requires no local match money. Only 12 grants were distributed.

If you hear music in the air, it could be coming from the Choralaires. The Starke County Choralaires are a chorus group that is a part of Melody Makers of Indiana. The Melody Makers of Indiana is the only chorus of it’s kind in the United States.

Thermo Pride Engineering Design Team Earns Award Nomination
An engineering design team from North Judson-based Thermo Pride is a nominee for a prestigious award from the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana. The Starke County Economic Development Foundation nominated director of engineering Everett James and project engineer Michael Sharkozy for the Team Innovators Award for their application of an existing technology to a new process. By doing so, they created an extremely safe, ultra-high efficiency oil-fired furnace for residential and commercial heating. Continue reading
