North Judson Town Board Adopts Budget After Public Hearing

  
 
The North Judson Town Board this week held their budget adoption hearing, and according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry, only one member of the public was present and no comments were made. The board adopted the budget and signed a resolution to that effect, allowing the board to proceed with the next step: submitting the budget to the Department of Local Government Finance for review.

A networking infrastructure upgrade is in the works for the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, and while it comes with a hefty price tag, Superintendent Lynn Johnson said it’s worth it to provide the best educational experience possible for students. With more and more technology being used by students, teachers, administrators and everyone else on a daily basis, the networking infrastructure in place throughout the corporation is no longer able to suit their needs, and the need to upgrade has become obvious.

The Catholic Charities group recently completed a wheelchair ramp for a local resident.

Several Starke County volunteers in the Catholic Charities organization got together on Wednesday and constructed a wheelchair ramp for Ida Craft of North Judson.

North Judson-San Pierre School Board Approves Master Agreement

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board this week approved the master teacher’s agreement in a special meeting, and Superintendent Lynn Johnson said they’re pleased with how it turned out.

“It was quite a long process, but both sides have always had a wonderful working relationship with our teacher’s association and even though the process was long, it was very successful and I think both sides are very happy with the master agreement,” Johnson said.

Invasive Species Field Day Planned Along Erie Trail

Plants are pretty and trees are terrific until they start to take over your property and choke out any other flora and fauna. The Northwest Indiana Cooperative Weed Management Area and Prairie Trails Club are teaming up for an invasive species field day to teach you how to identify and eradicate invasive plant species. Committee member Linda Byer says a hands-on workshop is planned Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. until noon CT on the North Judson Erie Trail.

North Judson Town Board to Hold Budget Adoption Hearing Oct. 7

  
 
The North Judson Town Board held a public hearing this week regarding the 2014 budget. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry explained there were no members of the public present, and Council President Wendy Hoppe presented the budget as it was advertised with no changes. An adoption hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7 prior to the regular meeting, and Henry said the town board will then sign a resolution to adopt the budget. Following that, the budget heads to the Department of Local Government Finance.

The North Judson Town Board this week received an update on the process of moving the town’s garage to a new building, and according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry, councilwoman Jane Ellen Felchuk is working closely with Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann and will soon be acquiring signatures from residents as required to establish that the town is in need of a new garage.

NJ-SP School Board Approves Receives Technology Update

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board at their meeting this week received an update on their technology plan, and according to Superintendent Lynn Johnson, the school will soon undergo some improvements on their networking infrastructure. She said they’re currently gathering quotes to improve the system, aligning various networking components to improve performance, in order to allow the school to possibly look into a one-to-one technology initiative in the future.

NJ-SP Superintendent Happy With ISTEP Scores

The ISTEP results are in for school corporations across the state and according to the superintendent of the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, the corporation did very well and showed growth in multiple areas. Lynn Johnson said she’s happy with the scores, especially the combined score for English/Language Arts and Math, which came in with an improvement over last year of four percentage points.

Report of Shots Fired in North Judson Ends in Three Arrests for Battery

 
 
Three people were arrested in Knox following reports of shots fired in the area of Leyton Court in North Judson. Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the North Judson Police Department responded to the area on Friday, Sept. 13, where they found a victim that stated she had been battered and tazed and the suspect had also stolen her purse.

HVRM to Celebrate 25th Anniversary Saturday

 
 

The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson will hold its 25th Anniversary Celebration and Open House on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The event-filled day begins at 9 a.m. with a flag ceremony by the American Legion Post #92 and music by the Knox High School Band. Magic shows, the Fair Oaks Mobile Dairy Classroom, buggy rides, storytelling, corn hole, horseshoes, motor car rides, Irish music by the Culver Pipe and Drum Corps, bluegrass music by the Peter Nye Band are just a few activities featured.

North Judson Author Signing Books at Library Today

A published author from North Judson has announced she will be doing a book signing at the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library today from 10 a.m. to noon. Dr. Laura L. Boilini recently published her first book, “Life’s Bouquet,” a compilation of the many lessons she learned from various people in her life. The book includes 14 chapters, each dedicated to an individual or individuals in her life that include a painting, a poem, a story, and a letter written to the influential person or persons.

North Judson Library Seeks Public’s Help in Digitizing Yearbooks

 
 

In an effort to preserve the memories stored in school yearbooks before they are lost to the sands of time, the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library is looking to digitize school yearbooks from North Judson-San Pierre High School, but according to Library Director Jane Ellen Felchuk, their collection is not complete. For that reason, the library is now asking for help from the public in order to compose a complete digital collection of the school’s yearbook history.
