The North Judson utility crew will be out and about next week picking up brush from alongside the roads. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said brush pick-up begins next week on Monday, Aug. 26, and she said any residents who has brush that needs to be disposed of should leave the brush laying alongside their alley before 7 a.m. Monday.
Town of North Judson to Sell Old Squad Car
The town of North Judson will soon be selling an old squad car, according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry. She explained the town will be putting the police cruiser up for bid soon, with a notice to be sent to the newspapers announcing the sale. Henry explained if she is able to get the notice published in time, the board plans to open bids for the vehicle on Sept. 16.
NJ-SP Schools to Start Athletic Booster Club
The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is in the process of developing an athletic booster club, according to Superintendent Lynn Johnson. She said Athletic Director Rob Vessely spoke to the board and explained that the effort is currently in the beginning stages and will start with football season as they endeavor to get more people involved in supporting school athletics.
Community Walk Scheduled in North Judson Tonight

North Judson 2014 Budget Passed, Now Goes to DLGF
The second budget workshop held by the North Judson Town Board to review their 2014 budget brought out no members of the public, despite being an open workshop. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the meeting lasted about a half hour and included a few minor changes, including the division of two appropriation accounts.

Chapman Pleads Not Guilty to Charges
The suspect in a shooting incident in North Judson last week appeared for his initial hearing in Starke Circuit Court yesterday afternoon, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of Criminal Reckless as a Class C felony and Resisting Law Enforcement as a Class D felony. Hanley Warren Chapman allegedly fired three shots from a handgun into his living room floor after an argument with his wife.
No Additional Charges Filed Against Shannon Watts… Yet
No additional charges have been filed against Shannon Watts, a man involved in an hour-long standoff with SWAT team members Tuesday at a home in Born’s Trailer Park. According to Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff, he has not yet received the paperwork required to determine whether or not additional charges are warranted, though he did say that a resisting law enforcement charge is likely. Whether that charge would be a felony or a misdemeanor is still undetermined.
Suspect in North Judson Standoff Has Lengthy Record
The North Judson man whose refusal to come to the door of his trailer when a sheriff’s deputy showed up with a warrant has a history of run-ins with the law. Shannon Watts was arrested in April of 2009 after reportedly trying to run over two police officers during a high-speed pursuit through Knox. A city police officer clocked him doing 81 in a 35 mph zone and tried to pull him over on U.S. 35, according to court documents. A pursuit around the northeast part of the city ensued, and Watts reportedly tried to run over two officers on Delaware Street. Officers from the Starke, LaPorte and Porter counties were all involved in the chase.

In wake of the North Judson Town Board’s public hearing regarding the town’s 2014 budget, Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry has announced that the board will soon hold a second budget workshop to review the budget. North Judson Man Arrested Following Standoff
An hour-long standoff between police and a wanted man outside a home in Born’s Trailer Park east of North Judson ended peacefully this afternoon. Detective Kenny Pfost with the Starke County Sheriff’s Office says officers tried to serve warrants on Shannon Watts for probation and parole violations. Pfost adds officers were told there were weapons inside the residence. Watts refused to come out of the trailer, so the officer who initially responded requested assistance from the SWAT team. Pfost says six officers surrounded the trailer while other members staged at the rest park on State Road 10 at county road 250 West. Continue reading
North Judson Town-Wide Yard Sale a Success, May Become Annual
Yard sale enthusiasts flocked to North Judson this past weekend to take advantage of the cornucopia of sales around the town. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the town was chock-full of cars and visitors searching for good deals at the more than 46 yard sales present on the map provided by the town. Henry said she traveled the area and asked some of the residents holding sales how they felt the day was going, and many responded favorably.
North Judson Town Board Approves Purchase Orders for Town Supt.
The North Judson Town Board last week approved three purchase orders for the town superintendent. According to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry, Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann told the board that a water meter at the apartments on Maryland Street needed replaced due to a broken internal part at a cost of $1000.
Formal Charges Filed Against North Judson Man in Shooting Incident
Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff has filed formal charges against a North Judson man who reportedly fired three shots into the floor from a semi-automatic handgun after an argument with his wife Wednesday night.
It was after she walked outside that 48-year-old Hanley Warren Chapman fired three gunshots into his living room floor. Chapman’s brother-in-law was still in the home at the time the shots were fired. He reportedly told police that Chapman fired the gun right next to him and he left the home. The police were then notified of the situation.
North Judson Town-Wide Yard Sale Today
The town of North Judson is holding their town-wide yard sale event today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said they currently have around 50 people in town signed up with more people outside of town registered for yard sales, and Henry said their maps were available on Friday with a list of yard sale locations.
Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum to Host Civil War Encampment
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum will be making a trip back in time on Saturday, Aug. 17 as Civil War encampments are established in the area. Railroading played a huge part in the Civil War, and the HVRM will allow visitors to wander through the encampment and experience the life of early soldiers as reenactors from the Indiana 20th Volunteers and the 4th Battery Light Artillery play the part.
Preliminary Charge Filed Against Warren Chapman
A preliminary charge of Criminal Reckless with a Firearm against 48-year-old Warren Chapman has been filed by the North Judson Police Department, but the report and evidence will be delivered to Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff Friday for review. Bourff may choose to file formal charges when he reviews the entire case.
North Judson Town Board Discusses 2014 Budget
The North Judson Town Board this week held a public hearing before their regularly scheduled meeting; the public hearing was held to conduct a budget workshop, as the board viewed their proposed budget, breaking it down line item by line item. This way, the board could determine if any adjustments were necessary for the 2014 budget before finally approving it.
While there were a few members of the public present for the meeting, no negative comments were made, according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry. She said there were no real adjustments made, but she did recommend to the board that the amounts for utilities or fuel be changed after comparing them to what was required the previous year.
Host Family Sought for North Judson Exchange Student
The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is hoping to have the opportunity to welcome an international exchange student, and they’re reaching out to the community in search of a host family. The International Student Exchange Program is looking for a family to host a student for this school year, as one opening is available for a student to attend North Judson-San Pierre High School.
